Your eyes fluttered open slowly as the bright light filled your field of vision. You glanced around the room, slowly, seeing Gandalf and Lord Elrond, until your eyes finally landed on Thorin, Fili and Kili.

"What happened?" you said groggily trying to sit up. The dwarves rushed to your side, relief settling in.

"The blade you were struck with was poisoned," Gandalf explained, "had it not been for Lord Elrond's healing skills, you would have been dead."

Thorin shot Gandalf a threatening look, but you turned to Lord Elrond, "thank you."

Elrond bowed his head lightly, "my pleasure. We shall give you some time to recover and let the others know you have awoken," he said, "they have been asking about you all day."

You nodded in thanks as Gandalf and Elrond left the room, leaving you alone with Thorin, Fili and Kili.

Thorin gripped your hand and brushed some hair from your face, "we were so worried about you."

"I'm alright," you said to all of them, slowly shifting on the bed, "just a little dizzy is all."

"Here," Kili said, offering you a flute of water, which you gratefully drank.

Fili lifted a blanket, covering you with it to keep you warm. You all sat there in silence for a few moments before Thorin cleared his throat, "Fili, Kili, why don't you go check on the others, and bring Lady (Y/N) something back to eat."

"Uncle-" Fili began, but he stopped as soon as he saw the look on Thorin's face. Fili grabbed Kili by the arm and pulled him out of the room. But Fili turned to look at you one last time as he walked out of the room.

Thorin's composure broke as a few tears strung the corners of his eyes. He laid his forehead against yours, "I thought I lost you, I have no idea how to do this alone," he whispered.

You reached up and placed a hand on the back of his head, "you never have to."

Thorin pulled back, a sad smile on his face, "I am putting you in danger, I have been since the day we met."

You shook your head, "I am no stranger to danger, I would follow you into anything, because you are my King, Thorin, and you always will be."

Thorin smiled, wiping the tears from his eyes, "and for that I am grateful."

FILI'S POV

Kili turned on him in the hallway, "Why did you leave her?"

Fili huffed, walking through the hallways towards the balcony where the others were staying, "did you not see the look on Uncle's face?" he asked his brother, "it was not a suggestion."

"But clearly there was more you wanted to say to her," Kili argued.

Fili snapped, "of course there was!"

Kili dropped his argumentative tone, "then why didn't you say it?"

Fili shook his head, "I don't need to make her life more complicated."

"What if she feels the same as you?" Kili asked.

"How could she," Fili responded sadly, "she is betrothed to a King, and that King is my Uncle, how could I try to come in between that."

"Does Uncle really love her?" Kili asked, "Their marriage was arranged, it is not like he chose her."

Fili shrugged, "perhaps he was indifferent once, but now, you see the way he looks at her, like she is the only woman in the world, like she is the most amazing thing he laid on eyes on."

"The way you look at her," Kili muttered.

Fili grabbed him by the shoulders, "Brother, you have to promise me you will not repeat anything I have told you."

"But-"

"No Kili," Fili interrupted, "no matter what my feelings are for (Y/N), it can't distract from our quest."

Kili nodded and Fili placed a hand on the top of his head, "most people believe that it is Uncle Thorin that would unite the seven dwarf lords, but it is her. It's her compassion and strength that will unite all of us, she must sit upon that throne, or there will never be a fully united dwarven kingdom." Fili continued, "it isn't just my feelings that this is about, it's about who she is, it's about the fate of our race."

Kili nodded, "but can you be happy without her?" He said it distantly, like it wasn't really about Fili anymore, but about himself.

Fili picked up on it, but he let it go, "I will be happy watching her have the world she deserves."

Kili nodded distantly as Fili turned him around and they continued on down the hallway towards the others. There would always be a place for you in Fili's heart, he knew he cared for you more than he would ever admit, but he also knew his place.
