DELILAH stood in line a small compact mirror in their hands, fixing up pieces of their hair that feel out and their mascara. They stood waiting patiently in front of Belly who was mumbling about prunes? For some reason.
Lilah looked up finally seeing Conrad standing across from them, bringing a smile to their face. Their name got called making the older Conklin girl look away from Conrad, they breathed in trying to calm their anxiety.
They walked towards the steps hoping their heels don't give up on them now like everyone else, Conrad smiled at the girl who looked close to having a breakdown.
His blue eyes connected with their brown for once, Delilah felt content, like they belonged. They belonged with him.
"I can't describe how beautiful you look tonight Delilah," their heart started to beat louder as the two walked off the stage heading towards, "are you drunk?" Delilah asked not believing his words.
"No," he said even though he has had a few drinks before leaving for the ball.
Lilah partly struggled to hold it together before heading to their mom handing her the red roses and curtsying as they went back to Conrad.
"Stop lying," they whispered in his ear, fed up with his lies knowing after he dropped them off he drank for three hours straight, with Jeremiah telling them.
"I'm not lying," Conrad mumbled before walking away, heading to get prepared for the escort dance.
Delilah sighed before sitting down next to Belly, "Conrad again?" She asked drinking some water. "Yeah," they muttered just as the escort dance started.
Susannah watched as the older Conklin girl sat in silence looking out of it, Delilah suddenly broke out of whatever they were in just as the music started, the yells of happy girls as their dates all started to dance.
Delilah needed a breather, they stood up from the chair just as the performance started needing to get away from the room.
The sound of their clicking as they ran out of the room, Conrad watched having no idea what to do except keep dancing, Delilah made it outside towards the pool, no one stopping them.
oh how they were gonna regret ever walking outside in the first place.
