Prompt: Looking out the second-story window
(Word Count: 149 Words)

I gazed out onto the garden. Several children were joyfully playing together, throwing a bouncy ball to each other. As their cheerful exclamations and shouts reached my ears, I smiled softly. Focused on their game, none of them saw me. None of them looked up to the second-story window to meet my watching eyes. My gaze wandered to the garden's edge, where their mother sat on a simple brown bench, watching them with a smile whilst mending torn shirts and shorts, only pausing now and then to call out some encouragement, or smooth out a row that needed refereeing. She too did not see the watching stranger.

As the grandfather clock chimed twelve downstairs, she arose and began to call the children for lunch. As the last of the children reluctantly trailed inside, I felt a sadness sweep over me as I wistfully gazed at my own barren stomach.
