MANILA, Philippines — After 25 years of the Valientes' leadership, Atty. Salazar Gallardo will take over the mayoral seat in Quezon City.

Gallardo, a human rights lawyer and a councilor, won against the former Quezon City mayor Manual Valiente of the Partido Makamasa.

The latest update from the transparency report indicated that Gallardo has gathered 1,304,162 votes while Valiente has earned 902,859 votes.

Gallardo thanked the people of Quezon City for voting for him and bringing an end to the Valiente clan's two-decade political dynasty. People have expressed their support for him on social media as they look forward to a more progressive city under his leadership.

"Narito na po tayo. Naipanalo po natin ang iisang mithiin natin para sa mahal nating lungsod. 'Yon ay ang wakasan ang political dynasty na nangyayari rito sa ating lungsod. Panahon na para sa mas progresibo, makabago, at malinis na pamamahala. Narinig ninyong lahat ang hinaing ng bawat isa," he stated on his Twitter account on May 9.

Gallardo is expecting an official proclamation from the Commission on Elections today. The 47-year-old elected Quezon City mayor is a law graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is first known for helping a group of public vendors in Quezon City, who were illegally put behind bars without due process, after he attended his oath-taking as an attorney in 1999.

The outgoing mayor, Gloria Valiente, was unseated by Isabel Rellas, Gallardo's running mate under Partido Makatao. Rellas is also a human rights lawyer and has claimed her victory for the vice mayoral seat after receiving 1,165,581 votes against Gloria Valiente's 1,041,440 votes.
