One bad thing about having friends was discovering the truth behind every lie that they told you.
Or behind every pretense they showed you.
It seemed like I was about a thousand miles away from the boy that had everything about me. Because when Lucas started driving, it never seemed like the car was going to halt.
When we got outside Ethan's ward, we met Tony. He was sitting on a bench, staring into space.
Immediately he noticed me, he looked at me from head to toe. And if the environment was not so tense, he would've half-frowned.
The actual thing was that he was half surprised to see me.
"Milia," he hugged Elsa in the process.
"What happened?"
"He was robbed last night."
I rolled my eyes, and he seemed to have understood why.
"You know I would've informed you first thing, Mily. But the guy pleaded. He was losing a lot of blood and that was the only thing I could do for him at the moment."
"So, what's going on now?"
"The doctors are giving him some blood, you know. He got so weak."
"And?"
"He'll be discharged after at least 8 hours of rest. At least."
I slowly sat down on the bench beside Elsa. I hitched my breath when she held me for comfort. "Dear Saviour. You're at 40."
She shrugged. "Doesn't matter now that I'm up and waxing."
I hugged her. "Thanks, El. Forget about the shoes. If there's anything you've done for me, is give me your life."
"Ow. It's your birthday."
"You thank people on your birthday. Drumstick."
"I'm not even fat."
Despite everything, I was able to smile. I felt a high level of comfort. I felt God's Arm of protection around me. I knew His healing hand was at work in Ethan's life.
A hospital was a sad place. The actual difference with a cemetery was that a cemetery was where people had things to say. In the hospital, you just see situations, mourning, and sadness overtake the atmosphere. If that made sense.
The antonym of this description was that we came to celebrate a birthday in a hospital.
"I remember meeting Emilia during my first birthday," Lucas said, earning hums from my best friend and her boyfriend.
"It was a very wonderful event. I was honored to have her."
His look could say that he was trying to flirt with me. But if you didn't talk deeply with Lucas once or twice, you would never know.
"All the girls Ethan has ever hung out with never made him smile the way he does. When you showed up at that ball, I knew he was going to give us the best jokes of his life. He did," both boys chuckled.
"He'd been eyeing you long before you both met. About 6 months before. He said he was gonna get you at all costs, but we never took him seriously. Look at you now, you're rushing to meet him at the hospital."
I blushed. "Am I?"
"She was already vibing with the girls after 10 minutes of sitting," Elsa commented.
"Yeah. I remember. Yasmine pointed out after the ball."
"And she behaves exactly like my mum."
I felt her straighten in Tony's arms.
