Midoriya, sorry, Santa, kept true to his word and Izuku returned to Hogwarts with an entire extra bag full to the brim of freshly baked goods and preservatives for Shoto. The Gryffindor insisted on sharing, not wanting to waste any before they went stale, and so they all crowded around in a corner of the Great Hall one evening stuffing themselves full of Inko's delicious baking. Shoto made sure to thank Santa for the gift, making the Ravenclaw laugh heartily.
The rest of the year flew by with classes, Quidditch and exams, with Ravenclaw winning the House Cup. That summer didn't feel as long, knowing he wouldn't be returning for the winter lifted some weight off of his shoulders. He told his father about the assignments he was doing as well as extra credit work to stay top of his year. Seeing him so focused on his studies, Enji excused the absence, and summer was spent the same as usual.
The Todoroki mansion was surrounded by a large oak forest, with trailing rivers leading to a small lake at the centre. It was hidden beyond sweeping willow trees and flowering bushes, meaning he could escape from his life just for a little while and soak up the peaceful beauty of nature. His father never came here, but he remembered his mother did, always bringing back water roots or fresh flowers that could be used in her cooking.
But soon summer ended and Shoto got on the train excitedly, talking to all of his friends crowded into the carriage or sitting in the corridor outside. He truly loved spending time with them, and each year they grew closer he felt like the luckiest person in the world; sometimes, he felt that these people were not only his friends, but his family too.
Since they were in 5th year now their workload increased as they focused on studying for their OWLs, their results deciding what subjects they could continue to study at NEWT level as well as what possible career opportunities they would get in the future. This meant that he didn't have much time to relax. He truly enjoyed studying and learning about the different genres of magic, and he liked pushing the boundaries of his abilities when guided by his teachers, but he still loved being with his friends too. After a long evening of studying, Mina would drag him over to the fire in the Gryffindor common room and ramble about her day whilst he dozed off; on weekends, he would try to get up earlier to go for walks around the grounds with Midoriya and Iida, basking in the peaceful morning air before a long day of gruelling work ahead.
They received coursework everyday, whether that be writing essays on the different effects of Wolfsbane on the changing Werewolf demographic in Britain, or analysing the meaning behind different star constellations each night. Everyday was busier than the last, so they were surprised at Dumbledore's announcement one Tuesday morning at breakfast.
"Good morning students. I understand that some of you in 5th year are considering continuing your studies of Defence Against the Dark Arts at NEWT level in order to aid your pursuit of future careers as Aurors. Therefore, today we have some guests from the Ministry to give a talk and demonstration on this such career, including," the Headmaster paused for effect, students holding their breaths, "Head Auror, Endeavour."
Shoto's cup slipped from his hand, the clatter hidden by the excited hollers of the 5th year students. Endeavour... was coming to his school... today. His hand began to shake and his throat closed up, eyes frozen on Dumbledore for a moment before looking down to where his drink was spilled across the table.
"Shoto? Shoto are you alright?" Momo asked with a frown. "You've gone very pale."
He opened his mouth to respond but no words came out, he only inhaled again as his throat and chest tightened up before pushing up from his seat and walking out of the Great Hall, needing to get some fresh air. He walked quickly, past any straggling students late for breakfast, and shoved open the main doors to the Entrance Courtyard.
