Shoto had a problem. A problem that consistent of eight words that tormented his brain daily. Not what he needed during his initial NEWT studies. His problem was this:
"Who do you have a crush on, Shoto?"
Mina's voice rang in his head every time he paused his studies of Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, Astronomy, Charms, Transfiguration, Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts. His problem was that he was pretty sure he knew who he had a crush on, and that it was practically impossible for said person to like him back.
This dilemma plagued his thoughts for the first few months of their 6th year at Hogwarts. Mina had asked him this during the time they were selecting what subjects they would continue at NEWT level, meaning he may have chose a certain subject more for the fact that a certain someone was taking it rather than the fact he was passionate about it himself.
Yes, Shoto is an idiot.
However, he truly does enjoy all of his classes, and spends lots of his time devoted to learning the art of magic in each discipline and how he can expand his knowledge to become more versatile and powerful. He was aiming for top marks in his NEWTs so he would have greater freedom in selecting his object of study in his final year.
He didn't have as much free study time between lessons throughout the week compared to some of his friends, as there was no select amount of NEWTs a student could take. Due to his top marks in the OWLs, with his lowest grade being Acceptable in Divination, which was fair since he didn't believe in such things as fate, especially since Lady Luck decided to put him into the Todoroki family, he was taking seven NEWTs whilst most of his friends took around four. Bakugou was also taking seven, and the three Ravenclaws were pushing themselves with eight!
As much as Shoto wanted to study he also valued his free time, but recently his free time had consisted of being pestered by Mina, and subsequently Uraraka and Denki, at every free hour and meal time about the object of his affections. At first he planned to ignore his fleeting thoughts until they disappeared entirely, but his friends caught sight of the faintest blush on his cheeks the first time Mina had asked the question, and therefore had not dropped the subject since.
Shoto didn't understand what the issue was. Yes, he believed he had a crush on someone as he was displaying the characteristics Uraraka had described when talking about her crush on Midoriya during one of their late night chats in the Library before curfew. He didn't know why he was invited to those chats seeing as he didn't participate much, but it was fun listening to the troubles and thoughts of his classmates, finding it both amusing and enlightening.
Anyways, Shoto knew it was inevitable that he would experience these feelings at least once in his life. Everyone did. Well, apart from Iida, who had clearly expressed his lack of interest in anything linked to romance or relationships; when Mina had asked him the same question on the Hogwarts Express, he had clearly stated he was asexual. At least, he thinks that was the word. Shoto had never heard of it, but after talking to Jirou he learned about the wide spectrum of feelings and attractions, and was respectful of Iida's identity.
But so what if Shoto had a crush? It was merely that, a crush, and it would pass with time. Right? He was certain the person he was attracted to had no interest in relationships too, yet alone him, for whenever they were brought up they scoffed and said if they wanted to be successful in life than they didn't have time for that sort of thing. That was something Shoto could agree with too, still fearful of the negative side of relationships from growing up with his parents, even if he could see how happy Jirou and Momo were together.
So it was only a crush, and it would soon pass, and he could finally spend the rest of the year focused on excelling in his studies so he could pass their tests next year.
