On the wall of St. Mary's Orphanage, tucked into a corner of the sleeping quarters, there's a bit of loose paneling right at the edge of one of the bunk beds. If you carefully shift the small cabinet resting nearby, which has likely been there for many years, you will find three different books hidden underneath it.

That's how fragile and brittle the books have become over time. But those books are what kept me company. They made me feel less lonely inside this four-walled room in the sleeping quarters of the Catholic orphanage, where I was sent, and other orphans like me.

I don't have much skill in reading yet, so it takes me four weeks to finish a single book. To be honest, I wish I were an even slower reader than I already am because I know I'll just go back to doing nothing once I finally finish all the books I've found.

It's another usual sunny day. The sun's rays pass through the old and dusty glass windows of the sleeping quarters, slowly creeping up to my cheek and allowing me to feel its warmth.

The books are ancient and very dilapidated due to neglect. I wouldn't be surprised if these books had been sitting in the same place underneath my bunk bed for a century. I wouldn't doubt it, since this building, where the orphanage was built, has been standing long before the Filipino-American War and the departure of the Spanish colonizers.

The three books were unique from one another as if they were picked to ensure there was variety. One of them is a novel called Anne of Green Gables, and from what I saw, it seems to have been published over a hundred years ago. I finished reading it last month.

The next book was probably the most recent one. It's a book about fashion, which is a little odd. I don't know how it found its way here. It was authored by a certain French fashion designer and published around the 1980s. Based on what I have read so far, it's the kind of book you would want to read if you wanted to study fashion. It starts with the basics, like the different types of fabrics, how to use a sewing machine, different types of design elements, etc.
