As I left Steve, I was second guessing myself. Should I have told him about John? Should I have told him about my powers? What did he mean he knew what it was like to lose someone?
I headed out into the night and when there were no people around flew up into the air. I flew around for some time clearing my head. It was dark when I landed in a deserted alleyway. Forming a hooded cloak for myself and pulling my shields up I headed out onto the street.
I few street down I heard some swinging jazz music. I followed it and went inside a small bar. I pulled down the hood of my cloak. This was greeted with too many thought of a degrading nature.
Ignoring them I headed to order a drink,
"Just water please."
"Sure thing sweetheart," the bartender said making my skin crawl. Across the room I heard a thought of; no, no, no please no. I turned to see a girl about my age with a man twice her age obviously drunk. I got up to walk over and the bartender grabbed my arm, "I wouldn't get involved sweet thing."
"Someone needs to," I said pulling my arm from his grip forcefully and walking to the girl, but before I reached them the man pulled her out of a side door.
"See what trouble you've caused," the bar tender said.
"At least I'm not afraid to stand up for other people."
"Get out." He sneered and spat in my direction.
"My pleasure." I said under my breath. I followed the girl's thought out into the alley; she was being held at gunpoint and used as a human shield. "Let the girl go and no one gets hurt." Cliché but it does the trick. "I don't want any trouble." I said calmly stepping closer to him.
He fired a warning shot just past my ear. "I don't want to hurt you," he replied. I dropped my shields. "Well, aren't you beautiful." He looked me up and down, licking his lips.
"Take me instead. You'll get much more for me, if you sell me to science than her for ransom." I tried a stab in the dark, as I'd lose my valuable reaction time if I used telepathy.
"What's to stop me taking you both? She's worth a lot of money." He asked. Bingo! I was right.
"This." I materialised a fireball in the palm of my right hand. "But let her go and I'm yours." He walked towards me bringing her with him once he'd tied my wrists he shoved her towards the main street, but she didn't run she reached into her back pocket for a phone,
"The package is secure boss," she said smiling at me, "Nothing personal just business." When I tried to read her thoughts I blacked out. The last thing I remembered doing was activating the locater Steve had given me praying he was keeping an eye on me.

When I woke up I was still tied up in the back of a van but alone. I burned through the rope with ease.
"Do you smell burning?" The man asked the girl upfront.
"Yes. Get back there and check on her."
"Boss. We might have a problem." She addressed the person on the other end of the line. "There's a man on a motorcycle that has been following us for the past 3 turns." Steve, thank goodness I praised internally. She just paused listening to the voice. "No he's defiantly tailing us, I've just made the fourth right turn in a row and he's still on us."
Meanwhile the man kicked me in the ribs, bad idea mate. I return his kick hitting his shin which brought him to the ground.
He reached for his gun and my mind still sluggish was too slow to stop him, he got four rounds off before I managed to deflect one into his shoulder causing him to drop the gun. One went into the wall of the van the others I had no idea.
