Chapter 8
Levon proved to be an interesting companion. He was very young, and full of naïve, and foolish opinions. I enjoyed them nonetheless.
“Why does magic have to be so… magical?” he asked me one day
“Levon, you are making no sense. Again.” I said
"I just mean, that if it weren’t so unreal, maybe people would fear it less”
“You must learn of what you speak, before you speak of it child”
“You sound older than you look” he pointed out
“How old do I look?” I asked him curiously, Elves do not count their lives in years, but in accomplishments
“You look no older than I, and I am seventeen. You could be sixteen”
“I assure you, I am older than you are”
“How old then?” I shrugged
“I don’t know” he stared at me
“You don’t know?” he asked incredulously
“Elves do not count their age in years, but in the many things they have accomplished. I am considered an elder among my people. My age would be hundreds considering what I have done” he just stared at me until I was glaring and then went back to concentrating on the road he was riding on. We were on our way to the mountains; to visit these Black Oaks we’ve heard so much about.

“There they are. A little small for mountains don’t you think?” Amarie said as we neared the mountains
“I wouldn’t know, ask Zevvran” I said
“Okay, hey Zev! Aren’t those a little small for mountains?” Amarie asked
“No. I’d say they’re actually larger than the average in these parts”
“Oh” Amarie said “how disappointing” I giggled and she glared at me. We reached the paths that supposedly lead to the Black Oaks hideout. I lead the way, picking samples of the plants and what not. Zevvran told me if they were useful or not
“What are these?” I asked holding up a suspicious looking plant
“Those are cranberry bushes” he said laughing
“So… you can eat them?” this made him laugh louder
“You could but I wouldn’t suggest it. They’re quite bitter” I frowned and put the plant down. We were at the base of the cave anyways.
“Are you all ready?” I asked my group of loyal followers
“Let’s go” Amarie said. I laughed and took them into The Black Oaks Lair.
***************
The first people we found were a pair of human guards, that were supposed to be watching the exit, but were playing cards instead. I walked up to them and said
“Nice place you got here” the two men jumped and I stifled a laugh
“What are you doing here?” the smaller one asked
“Why, I was just on the mountain picking cranberries, when I came across this cave” I said. The two men scratched their heads
“I’m joking you fools! I am here to see the leader of the Black Oaks” the bigger one looked at me and said
