Chapter 17

We ran into the battle in silence. It was eerie and obviously made the Guardians falter in their steps, giving us the advantage. I ran through the battle casting spells and starting fires. I felt the souls of men all around me fade away as I went. The first person fell on my side of the battle and was soon joined by others. Levon saw it and roared, his sword flashing in the dark as he sliced his way through a group of Guardian soldiers. It seemed that death gave him strength, and I thought that probably had something to do with the deal he made with Lady Death. Zevvran was dancing around me, his sword and dagger slicing through anyone who tried to get too close to me while I was working my magic.  Someone cut through Zevvrans arm as he spun and I screamed in anger. I raised my arms up to the sky and lightning struck the man turning the ground he stood on into glass and him into ashes. Zevvran looked at me in shock and then continued on into his fight. The guardians weren’t trying to get close to me anymore; it seemed that they were all trying to shoot me with arrows. I laughed at their feeble attempts to kill me and continued on in my magic. I saw a man running towards me, brandishing a sword that was obviously too heavy for him and began to cast when a blond tornado swooped in and shot the man in the chest; a waterfall of crimson tears landed at my feet. I looked at them in pity and said

“Amarie, I had that under control!” she just smiled

“I like a dramatic entrance” she said with a laugh. I smiled and continued on fighting. Blocking arrows as they flew and avoiding anything that could be harmful. The ground was littered with bodies now; from both their side and ours. Kamen was back to back with Levon killing anyone in sword distance of him. Andastrad was surrounded by soldiers, fighting to keep him safe, more than they were fighting to save our kingdom.  Zevvran brought a man down with the handle of his sword and looked at me with his beautiful golden eyes

“I love you” he said as he wiped the blood from his sword. I smiled and turned around seeing the man with the sword one second to late, he flew at me with a mad look in his eyes. I closed my eyes and readied myself for death. I heard him roar as he brought the sword down and was knocked to the ground. I opened my eyes and saw the sword go through Zevvrans middle, blood soaking through his gold armour. He gasped and I screamed. He looked at me and his lips parted

“Layana” he said in a coarse voice. I ran to him, killing the man that stabbed him and trying to give Zevvran his life force. Zevvran gasped in response but his wound didn’t close. I cradled his head in my arms

“Zevvran. My Zevvran” I whispered as the tears flooded my cheeks. He smiled at me

“Thank you Layana” he said quietly. I looked into his eyes

“For what? Letting you die?!” I asked. He laughed and grabbed my hand, giving it a weak squeeze.

“No Layana. You... showed me love” he whispered. Then he coughed and blood dribbled down his chin

“No! You can’t die! Not now, after everything! You promised Zevvran! You promised!” I whimpered. He looked into the distance, staring at the storm clouds

“I’m sorry” he said, pulling my face down to his and kissing me with all of his might. I cried and kissed him back, willing my love to keep him alive. “I love you” he whispered and then his eyes glassed over and he was no longer in my arms. I turned back into my Elven form in a flash of red light. I fell, my face in the moist sand. I cried loudly, my sobs heard all throughout the battle, people wept in response to the sadness that could be heard in my voice.

“Zevvran? Zevvran! No! I will not let this go unpunished” I screeched. I stood up and screamed at the top of my lungs, a ball of red light formed between my hands it grew and grew until it was too large for me to carry. I threw it into the air where it fell down wards and exploded in a sheet of red light, the color of blood.

Time seemed to freeze and I felt like I was watching everything from a distance. I saw my light explosion wash through the battle field killing every Guardian it touched. I saw Kamen running towards me tears rolling down his face as he swung down beside me and pulled on my arm

“Layana! We can’t stay here!” he said. The only thing I could hear was his voice, pulling me through the darkness, the rain and the tears, pulling my eyes away from the blood, and the love of my life. I saw myself look at him and shake my head

“I can’t, he promised” I said in a voice I didn’t recognise. He wiped away my tears, then wiped away his own

“We can take him with us Layana, but we need to get you out of here” he said, pulling on my arm. I saw myself nod and I lifted Zevvrans lifeless body into my arms, and my heart broke a hundred times over. He lifted Zevvran and I onto Zevvarian, and got up onto his own horse. People bowed to us, tears rolling down their faces as they saw me. I cried freely, allowing Zevvarian to take me wherever he felt the need to take me. I knew people were making noise and speaking to me, but I couldn’t look away from Zevvrans bloodstained face, his pale lips and his lips, that were tilted up in a memory of a smile. We were long past the battle field now, riding through the camp where the worried wives were waiting. I saw their tears as they held their husbands in their arms and I couldn’t take it anymore. I cried out and pulled Zevvran and I off Zevvarian, where we tumbled to the ground and lay in the dirt. I lay on top of him and cried in a way that cannot be described. I cried in the way a person only can when they just watched someone they loved die. And that will never be something that can be told, only experienced.
