Why production companies should not turn beloved children's characters into horror movies the second the characters become public domain?
A few examples of beloved children's characters becoming horror movies are "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey," "The Curses of Humpty Dumpty," and "The Legend of Jack and Jill." All of those are produced by Jagged Edge Productions.
Currently, this genre is not very popular (thank goodness) as there are not many widely known children's characters in the public domain.
There are not many details out about "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey." However, we do know that the movie follows Pooh Bear and Piglet as they scavenge for food after Christopher Robin leaves for college. In this movie, we will see Pooh and Piglet become serial killers. This movie only includes Pooh and Piglet and a piece of Eeyore, because apparently, they eat him. It is based upon the characters from A.A. Milne's books as Disney still owns the copyrights to their version of the characters. This movie is live-action and honestly, kind of creepy.
Talking to a few friends on this, I got a variety of opinions on this topic: one said that they want to see this because ruining people's childhood is hilarious. Another person I talked to said that they are not interested in the characters, but they still want to see the movie because they want to see what Jagged Edge Productions can do with such a low budget. Which I cannot seem to find anywhere. One other person I talked to does not want to see the movie at all.
I personally do not think that this movie is going to do well. I think that the audience that this movie is targeting will not want to watch a movie about Christopher Robin "abandoning" his best friends and said best friends going back to their animal tendencies.
Another person I have spoken to thinks that this movie will do very well. He thinks that many horror film viewers will eat this movie up. He said that many people will not care what characters are being put into the movie. The audience will just be interested in seeing characters that they grew up with becoming feral serial killers.
I do not think that the lovable, honey-loving bear will make for a very good horror movie. These characters were written as a bedtime story for the author's son. His name was Christopher Robin, which is why Pooh's best human friend was named that. It was something fun for father and son to bond over.
The other two movies this production has made both scored very low with movie-goers. One review on the IMDb page for The Legend of Jack and Jill reads "three words: don't watch it. Summed up in the title, how IMDb rated it 5.4 is beyond me. 1.4 at best for the amusement in watch the prosthetics in different scenes."
