"He's what?" I asked, shocked.
If wolves could replicate human expressions, Phantom was shocked as well, her eyes wide, lower jaw slack and her ears pinned against her head.
Impossible came her whisper.
Phantom.... Fox approached her carefully, his red fur shining in the sunlight. He managed to get close to her face and let out a small huff of air into her nose, sending her reeling backwards into a tree.
Phantom, look, we tried tracking him down but he made it outside of the borders. We would have followed but you know we're already in trouble for the stunt we pulled at your sisters shifting. The council is gathering as we speak and you knew we are going to be a major topic to them, not to mention the fact that you're one of three female Alphas left after that they did to Lilac and Thorn...those two still haven't recovered. Holly cut in, hanging her head sadly. And remember, you're the only one the silver didn't take full effect on, for whatever reason. Breeze and Fern are still in a coma state, and with each passing hour their fur turns even more silver and the chances of their survival grows slim. At least the humans that Lilac and Thorn were bonded too died almost instantly, leaving the effects of the silver to a minimum. They'll never be able to bond but...at least they're alive. That's something they have to be thankful for.
Phantoms mismatched eyes conveyed an emotion that I cannot express; something between fury, extreme sadness and pain. Everything in the small clearing seemed to grow silent for a while as I tried to process the emotion that the wolves had conveyed. So the wolf that attacked me, Marcos, hadn't been lying. There had been other attacks on the females that were in line to accept the Alpha title of their own packs. And from what Holly had said, two of them were already dead and the other two were in a coma fighting for their lives. In a strange way, it pained me to hear about their deaths because even though I didn't know them, we had all been part of someone's foolish plan to take power. They were my sisters in a sense and I knew I had to bring their attackers to justice. I felt this immense anger begin to rise inside me but I knew I had to keep a logical head in this situation, acting out would get me nowhere. Phantom on the other hand had other ideas.
I could see the hatred at the situation we had found ourselves in rise from the depths of her eyes and surface. She began to pace and I knew that she was having a hard time controlling her anger, Kasei had once pointed out to me that I did the same thing when I was getting mad or frustrated.
"Phantom, you need to calm down" I said, trying to calm my own emotions and trying to calm hers as a side effect.
How can I be calm when all of this is happening??!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to have to tell your little brother that you hate him just to protect him? Do you know that I was friends with all the she wolves that are either dead or sick?! We trained as Alphas together!! They were some of my best friends and now they're gone and I have to deal with all of this by myself!! She snapped.
The moment she finished her rant, she flung herself to the nearest tree, crashing into it with her full weight. Holly and Fox stood frozen in place, as if they knew not to try and calm her when she was blinded by hate and anger. On the other hand, I couldn't stand by and let her do this, also because the moment she threw herself toward the tree, my breath was taken away from me. She seemed to forget that the bond I had with her was stronger because of our proximity and the silver running through our veins, and I could feel the bruise forming on my side from where Phantom's side had taken the force of the hit. She stood up, only slightly dazed and launched herself at the trees on the other end of the forest, again running toward them and gaining momentum to fling her entire weight at it. I cried in pain as I felt the bond transfer the injuries that she inflicted on herself towards me.
Time and time again she launched herself toward trees, always slamming into them with her full weight, as I struggled to stop her, slowly losing my breath with each successive hit. Soon, I was on my knees, gasping for breath, the wounds that were starting to heal open again and bleeding. Phantom seemed near exhaustion herself, blood dripping onto the ground and staining the tree trunks she continued to fling herself at. At this point I had had enough of her outburst. The next time she began to run, more like limp at this point, I tackled her, wrapping one arm around her chest, in front of her front legs, and one underneath her ribcage, forcing my body to press itself as close as possible to her.
She snapped and struggled to escape my grip, but her exhaustion was no match for me, even through my pained state.
"I do know what it's like to hurt your brother." I whispered to her, as close to her ear as possible, receiving only a head-butt to the nose in return. But I kept holding on. "I told my brother he was useless to me right before the silver was injected into me. And I might not have of had someone my own age to train with as Alpha, but I can feel your pain. We are bonded. And just remember you are never going to be alone. I will always be with you. And so will Fox and Holly. They are your best friends, and will stand by you through everything."
My words seemed to calm her down a bit, because she stopped struggling and lay limp in my arms. She slowly sat up and looked at me with her green and silver eyes expressing her grief. She turned away from me and for a moment I thought she was going to start ramming the trees again, but she threw back her head and let out the saddest, loneliest, most beautiful howl I had ever heard. She was calling for her brother to come back to her, wherever he was.
I need to find him she told me, blocking off communication with the two wolves next to us, who had joined her song. But Fox and Holly are in too much trouble already. I can't risk involving them with this.
I nodded my head in agreement.
Tomorrow, we leave to find my brother.
