Cynthia POV
Even though the border was invisible, the moment we crossed it, I felt as if I had been plunged into cold water in the middle of winter. I got goosebumps all over my body and I felt Phantom tremble fiercely against my leg. I realized her presence in my head was withheld on her end, as if she didn't have the link fully open to me.
"Phantom, are you okay?" I asked worriedly.
Fine. Let's go. Was her curt reply.
She walked forward and stumbled, but quickly regained her balance. She huffed then trotted forward again and I started after her. We walked for hours, and when the sun was finally high overhead, we decided it would be best to take a break so we didn't burn more energy walking in the sun. We found a large tree with roots that were on the surface and made ourselves comfortable along the base of it. I, for one, was happy to be out of the sun and in the shade of a large tree and started to doze off, but Phantom was restless and kept pacing in front of me.
"You need to calm down. I know you want to find your brother but we also have to take care of ourselves so we can find him faster." I mumbled, half asleep.
How can I be calm? I'm the one who made him run away! This is all my fault. She whimpered.
"Phantom. Listen to me. You can't keep blaming yourself for what happened. Maybe you just need a distraction."
Phantom stopped pacing and turned to stare at me. A distraction? Like what?
I opened one eye and scoured the surrounding area. I grabbed a large stick that was an arm's length away and weighed it in my hand. Deciding it was a decent weight, I waved it in front of Phantom's nose, and once I had her attention, threw it with all my might. I half expected Phantom to chase after it and hoped she would, but she just watched it sail past her head and turned to look at me with the most incredulous expression a wolf could give.
"Fetch?" I giggled, half heatedly.
How about no. she growled. I'm not a dog. I won't do tricks or obey commands. And I most definitely will not play fetch.
"Well fine. How about we get to know each other? I mean I know we're bonded and all that good stuff, but I want to know you as a separate part of myself, since our bond seems to be limited at the moment."
Phantom seemed to be intrigued by this idea and settled down at the base of the tree a few feet away from me. What do you want to know?
"Well...I'm not sure." A little taken aback by her interest. "What about...normal things? Like what are your favorite things to do? Brothers and sisters? Favorite colors?"
Hmm...well I love going on hunts. She stated, eyes focused on me. Even though my coat makes me stand out a lot, especially during the spring and summer. Night time hunts are my favorite because no one can really see me, though that might change now with this silver in me. I've had Alpha training since the moment I was born, so small things don't really phase me. I'm the middle child, my older sister is bonded to your older sister, and my brother will be bonded to yours....or well they would've been.
Immediately sensing the change in her mood, I knew I had to keep distracting her. "Wait, if your bloodline is bonded to mine, why weren't we born together? Aren't my parents' wolves your parents?"
Phantom tilted her head. No. why would they be? There is only one pair of Alpha Wolves that produces the bonded wolf for the human Alphas per pack. So in essence, your parents' wolves are my brother and sister. Or well your fathers' wolf is. Your mothers' wolf has a different bloodline so she has a different set of Alpha Parents. If your father had decided to stay with your mothers pack instead of returning home, I would not be your bonded wolf, the Alpha Parents of your mothers' wolf would have given birth to your wolf. Did your elders not explain this to you?
"They might have. Honestly, I get bored when my parents try and teach me things like that so I end up zoning out. And you said the Alpha heirs are the only ones born. So where do the bonded wolves of my Beta and Lead Warrior come from?"
Well pay attention now. My Alpha Parents are known as Blazing Rain and Silver Feather. My father has been alive for many centuries, as has my mother. They were excellent caretakers though my time with them was limited. I was always more attached to my father though. She flicked her ears back and forth. As for the other bonded wolves, they are chosen from wild wolves who display the traits of a bond at an early age. Every wolf from your pack is chosen from there and taught how to behave with their bonded human. That's how we prevent any inbreeding and introduce new genes.
"Huh. Who knew things were so complicated?" I muttered
I did. It gets even worse when you get to the Royal Family and the Council. But we don't have to worry about it right now. Phantom sighed and rested her head on her front legs. We just need to focus on finding Shadow for now. She let out a huff of air and closed her eyes for what I imagined was a short nap.
I smiled to myself, then rolled back onto my back and shut my eyes as well, trying to wrap my head around the fact that in a matter of days, I had been attacked by an enemy pack, separated from my pack, injected with silver, been on the verge of death, met my bonded wolf and the wolves bonded with my friends, and ran away from Wolf territory in order to find Phantoms brother.
Its been a whirlwind. I thought to myself. I sighed gently and let the days exhaustion take me away.
