06. family game night

•—✽—✽—✽—•

two days later

WHILE DICK AND RACHEL LEFT TO GET her somewhere safe away from Detroit, where she was being hunted, Paige had stayed behind. Dick had told her where he was going and that she could join whenever she wanted to.

"Thanks," she said to him, "But, running around isn't really my style. I'll let you know if I need you. Keep her safe."

"I will," Dick said as he looked back at the girl sitting in the car. The two adults gave each other a curt nod before he got in, driving off. Paige stood in the garage with her arms crossed as she watched them speed off.

Muttering to herself, she sighed, "Yeah, I know you will."

Now all Paige had been doing was going to work and going back home. It was a pretty boring cycle to be honest.

She had been lying in bed, trying to fall asleep so that she could nap but she just couldn't. Her eyes were stuck on the ceiling above her. The only sound heard was her breathing and the faint beating of her heart.

And then another sound was heard, and another, and another, and suddenly Paige was sat up in her bed. First, she heard the creaking of her apartment door as it was pushed open. Next, it was hushed whispers from the main living space. Lastly, it was the sound of footsteps against the wooden floor.

Fighting against the panic that was building up in her, she slowed her breathing as she got herself to relax. Her body faded until she was no longer visible to anyone. Instead of risking her location due to the sound of the door opening, Paige phased through the wall.

She walked into the living room fully expecting Laverna to finish the job off, but instead found herself in the middle of a family who had been sitting around bickering. None of them having any idea that she was right in front of them. "So who wants to go first?"

All of their eyes suddenly snapped towards the woman who had appeared in front of them as malicious grins twisted onto their faces. "Where's Dick Grayson?" The mother of the family of four asked.

Tilting her head, Paige looked at the woman with her eyebrows furrowed. "Who?"

"Detective Dick Grayson, your old partner," the father added on.

"I'm sorry to disappoint, but..." Paige began as she gave them a look of sincerity as she spoke, "I don't know a Dick Grayson."

Her eyes locked onto the woman who had swung at her with a knife as Paige bent backwards to avoid the blade. Grabbing the woman's arm as she snapped back up, she twisted it behind her body as she heard a bone crack. The son then tried to attack before Paige side kicked him before shoving the woman away into her daughter.

As Paige fought the boy, she felt the father wrap a cord around her throat as he pulled him towards her, watching as the woman and the two kids all stood in front of Paige.

"Tell us where he is!" The woman yelled.

"Over my dead body," Paige sneered, spitting onto the woman's face. She watched as she blinked a couple of times in disbelief before wiping the spit off in disgust. Her head turned back in Paige's direction as her eyes lowered into slits.

"That can be arranged." Using most of her strength, Paige lifted her leg up high enough so that she could kick the man that had been choking her directly in the face before the mother could reach her.

The girl had caught her by her hair, slamming her down to the ground as she kicked her hard in the side. Paige groaned out in pain before another kick was sent to her face. The mother had kneeled over her as she held her head up, bringing a knife up to her throat. Paige had managed to hold the woman's arm, preventing the blade that was centimeters away from coming any closer.

With her other hand, Paige punched the woman in the face causing her to let go. Quickly, the mother kicked her forward into her son who cut a gash against Paige's stomach.

Her movement was restricted as she was grabbed by the father again as he held a knife to her throat, the cold blade barely touching her skin. "Alright, I'll tell you!" She yelled. "I'll tell you." Paige felt the man's hold on her loosen just enough so that she was able to have some room to work with.

Her eyes scanned the people in the room. The mother and the son as well as the father behind her all had knives. The daughter was empty handed. "He's..." Using enough force, she dropped down, swinging her leg in order to knock the father down as she rolled to avoid the swinging of knives from both the mother and the son as she lunged towards the daughter with her fist pulled back.

She made contact with the girl's face causing her to stumble backwards as Paige kicked her in the stomach. The girl folded over before a kick came up, hitting her chin. Paige watched as she fell over onto the ground before moving out of the way as a knife was jabbed in her direction. Taking the boy's arm, Paige flipped him over as he landed on the ground with a loud thud.

Finding an opening, Paige ran towards the door as a knife was thrown at her, cutting her arm as she unlocked the apartment door, making her escape. She ran down the stairs until she made it to the lobby. As soon as she made it into her car, she drove away until she was a safe distance away from her apartment, parking in some vacant lot.

Looking down at her stomach, she analyzed the large wound that had been bleeding profusely. She scanned around the lot until her eyes landed on a pharmacy.

It was closed but Paige needed supplies fast and a locked door with a closed sign wasn't going to stop her. She tried to phase through, but she was too weak to be able to. "Shit," she muttered to herself. A large rock caught her interest as she picked it up and felt its weight. Eyeing the door, she backed up before throwing it right through the glass, watching it shatter into tiny pieces.

She had been in and out, grabbing everything she needed before heading back to her car. As soon as she sat down in the drivers seat, she felt her eyelids start to get heavy. Paige had to resist the urge to give into the pain and weakness and fall asleep where she would eventually be found dead from blood loss if she did.

Pushing through the pain, she stitched up the wound before placing a gauze over it as she secured the edges with medical tape and wrapped a bandage around her stomach to keep it in place. Repeating her steps, she did the same thing for her arm.

Leaning her head back against the seat, Paige ran her fingers through her hair as she sighed. A dry laugh escaped her lips before she slammed her hands against the steering wheel out of pure frustration. "Fuck!"
