the next day
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE PURPOSE OF THE getaway driver? It's so self explanatory even a toddler could understand it. It's literally in the name, 'getaway' and 'driver'. Well for those that don't understand something as simple as that, the getaway driver is the person who waits in the car, ready to drive away once whoever it is they're with returns with whatever it is they've returned with. From then on, they drive away and try to avoid whatever's brought at them as they rush towards freedom.
Paige was not the getaway driver in this example. For one, she wasn't the driver. And two, she wasn't committing a crime. Well at least one she had prior knowledge about. She was just a woman in a car, scrolling through her phone, waiting for company to return.
Dick and Paige had gone to Chicago to find whoever sent the family after them and what they wanted with Rachel. So, while Dick went in alone, Paige sat in the passenger seat with her feet on the dash. As the time passed, she felt herself slowly fall asleep.
It was almost peaceful until she jolted awake by the sound of car doors slamming shut. "How many times do I have to tell you? Lighten up on those damn doors," she sighed, regaining her composure. As he apologized, she took a glance over her shoulder at the new addition to their team of strays. "Who's the kid?"
"I'm Jason Todd," the boy waved excitedly.
"The new Robin," Dick added as he started the car. Her eyebrows raised as she looked between the two in mere surprise.
"Wow, the Bats sure knows how to show sympathy. So... Robin and Robin," Paige said as she lowered her voice down to a whisper only she could hear. "This should be fun."
They had been driving around Chicago for a couple of minutes. Jason was in the back seat trying to contain as much of his excitement as possible. He was finally meeting Dick Grayson. The man he had only heard stories of and idolized when it was his turn to be Robin. Every time he put that suit on he wondered how he could be just like him. In his eyes, Dick was almost a hero to him.
"Can't believe it," Jason finally said, "Here we are, together, in the same car. This is so cool!"
"Yeah," Dick said as he wiped his nose, that had periodically dripped blood, with a rag. That caught Paige's attention as well as the bruise that had started to form on his cheekbone.
"What happened to your nose?" she asked.
"It's nothing. It's just—"
"Probably broken. Would've been worse if I hadn't gotten there at the right time," the boy interrupted.
Shooting him a glance through the rear view mirror, Dick lightened up a bit before he started asking questions. "So how long have you and Bruce been..."
"Together? Almost a year."
"A year?" he asked as Jason nodded before he scoffed through a light chuckle. "Wow. Okay. Didn't waste any time. So how did you and he—"
"I was out boosting cars. Guess I chose the wrong one. Or the right one."
"You tried to steal the Batmobile?"
