Song - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths

Nancy drove to school with Steve today so I told her I would just meet her there. I think she's kind of realized some of the stuff she did to me wasn't very cool so she asked if I was sure. I told her I was but she insisted that if I wanted to I could ride with her and Steve. I assured her it was okay and I would take my car.

I arrive at school and see Steve's car in the parking lot so I walk up and knock on the window of Nancy's side.

She rolls it down and smiles at me.

"What's going on Nancy? Stevey boy looks upset."

"His paper is due tomorrow and he needs to restart it or reorganize it and we have dinner with Barb's parents."

"Oh. Well, let me do it. I can help. Like, make another paper with what I think should be changed or something. I get top scores in English remember. I won't change it all but I can make it a bit better."

"You don't have to y/n it's fine. I'm just gonna forget it."

"No don't forget it. Give it to me. I'm not doing anything tonight my parents want to 'hang out with their precious daughter.'"

"Are you sure?"

"Two hundred percent."

"Alright here. Don't change too much."

"I won't. I'll keep the original too so if you hate my version sooooo much you can just forget about it or turn the original in." I smile grabbing the paper.

Right then I hear an engine revving and I turn to look while Steve and Nancy get out of the car. It's a greasy-looking redhead boy and his sister who honestly looks pretty cool for her age.

All the girls are fawning over him but I don't know I'm not a big fan. He looks mean as fuck.

Me Nancy and Jonathan all walk into school together and I and Nancy take a neon orange flyer that reads:

Tina's Halloween Bash Come And Get Sheet Faced.

Haha so funny. I know I know I'm miserable.

Jonathan doesn't take one so Nancy grabs an extra and shoves it into his hands.

"Your coming to this!" Nancy smiles.

"'Come and get sheet faced' no I'm not."

"I can't let you sit all alone on Halloween. That's just not acceptable."

"Yeah, Jonathan. I'll be there and I won't have a date like Nancy so I'll need someone to talk to." I poke his arm and raise my eyebrows in a 'you should come do this so I don't have to suffer through every minute of it' way.

"Well, you can relax. I'm not gonna be alone. I'm going trick or treating with Will."

"All night?" Nancy questions.

"Yeah."

"No, no way. You're gonna be home by 8:00. Listening to the talking heads and reading Vonnegut or something."

"Sounds like a nice night."

"No, it doesn't Jonathan." I smile.

"Jonathan just come. I mean who knows. You might even, like, meet someone." That's when Steve comes out of nowhere.

"Oh my god take those stupid things off!" She begs.

"I missed you."

"It's been like an hour."

"Tell me about it." He smiles kissing her.

"Okay, okay. Okay. God."

"Sorry." That's when Nancy notices Jonathan walking off.

I work on the paper all night. Nancy was right when she said it didn't make any sense. I finally have it all done by 7:00 and it's ready to fly back to Steve's hands.

I can't help but wonder how the dinner with Barb's parents is going. I assume not very well. It must be hard for Nancy to know what happened and have to lie about it and feed them false hope.
