Song - Mind Over Matter (Reprise) - Young The Giant
The next day after school I am like always, bored, so I sit in the gym while basketball practice goes on, and I kind of just watch when my book gets too boring and I need a break from the tiny words.
I hear Billy going on and on about how he is the king of the school now and how Steve doesn't run it anymore. To be honest I don't think Steve cares all that much about being king of the school. He is still popular and that's all that really matters to him at the moment.
"Maybe you should just shut up and play the game." Steve snarls and Billy pushes him over. He looks up at me and I give him a thumbs up.
Then Nancy walks in and my eyes kind of go wide. I keep sensing Billy staring at me and if I acknowledge it I am literally going to throw up in the gym and then they'd have to pull out the cleaning equipment and that would be too embarrassing.
"Steve?" She calls out.
He walks over to her and she pulls him out of the gym to talk and I sit and chew at my fingernails. Something in my gut tells me that the conversation is not going to go well for at least one of them.
It's not long before Steve's teammates are yelling at me to go get him and so I stand up and run out to go find him.
"Steve... They are yelling at me. Apparently they 'need Steve. That douchebag is killing us, man.'"
"All right." He starts walking my way and points and Nancy and says one other thing. "I think that you're bullshit."

Song - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Nancy calls me up in the morning to tell me that she's going to tell Barb's mom everything whether I go or not so she would like me to go. I agree because I realize that even though I can't stop her Barb was still my friend and I care about her getting justice if that is the only option we have.
Jonathan picks me up in his car and then we drive to Nancy's house. We come up with a plan that she is going to tell her mom she is spending the night at my house for a girls night. I wait in the backseat for a few minutes until Nancy comes in and gets in the passenger side seat and Jonathan drives away. I feel bad because I am on Steve's side in all of this but I am still hanging out with Nancy but I feel obligated to because it has to do with Barb.
"Did you see your mom, Jonathan? Your parents, y/n?"
"No but I left a note. She was sleeping." Jonathan answers.
"Mine are still on a business trip. They are gone for a month."
"You know you guys don't have to do this."
"Stop saying that."
At the park all three of us feel like people are staring at us and talking to themselves and we just don't have good vibes.
"I think we should go." Nancy suggests but I am up off the bench before she can even finish the sentence.
We walk back to the car as fast as we can without seeming suspicious or anything. We notice some guy behind us who looked like he was watching us while we were on the bench so we begin walking fast and our plan of not looking weird kind of crumbles.
We shut the doors quickly but Jonathan can't get the car to start. A knock on the window by another who seemed as if he were watching us in the park makes us jump in our seats.
"Trouble with your car miss? I can give you three a lift if you'd like?"
"Jonathan... y/n." She is scared but I don't blame her because I am too. On all sides of our vehicle are people closing in on us who looked suspicious in the park.
The old man knocks on Nancy's window again. "You sure you don't need that ride?"
Eventually we don't have a choice but to get out of the car. We are quite literally surrounded. They take us to Hawkins lab and shove us in what seems to be a room where criminals are interviewed. Nancy gets fed up pretty soon and starts yelling at the camera in the corner of the room.
"Hey! Hey, assholes! Let us out of here!" Just then a older man comes in who is wearing some sort of lab or doctor coat.
"Oh, not very pleasant in here is it? Sorry about that. Hospitality's not our strong suit." he gestures around the room. "You know, scientists, and all. Yeah, okay. You up for a little walk?" He motions us out of the room but we don't move until he speaks again. "I'm assuming you're behind me. Men of science have made abundant mistakes of every kind. George Sarton said that. You guys know who George Sarton is? Doesn't really matter. The point is, mistakes have been made. Yes."
"Mistakes?!" Nancy exasperates.
"Yes."
"You killed Barbara!"
"Abundant mistakes but, the people involved with those mistakes, the ones responsible for what happened to your brother and Miss Hollands death, they're gone. They're gone, and for better for worse, I'm the shmuck they brought in to make things better. But I can't make things better without your help."
"You mean without us shutting up?"
"She's tough this one. You guys been together long?"
"We're not together." Jonathan answers and I can't help but internally scream thank god! Not thank god Jonathan and Nancy aren't together because frankly I think they would be cute together but, thank god because finally someone doesn't think that me and him are dating.
"Wanna see what killed your friend?"
"What kind of question is that you dipshit!" I nearly yell.
"I suppose you are right Miss y/l/n, that was a sort of silly question to ask but even though it may have seemed snotty I assume the answer is yes."
He leads us into a room where a few men sit in front of control boards.
"Teddy, I brought you an audience today. I hope you don't mind."
"More the merrier sir."
The man points to a large window. "I call it one hell of a mistake. Wouldn't you?" He questions as well all stare at the large gate. It's like a giant front door version of the gate Nancy crawled through that was in the tree.
"See the thing is we can't seem to erase the mistake. But we can, stop it from spreading. Like, it's like pulling weeds. But imagine for a moment if a foreign state, let's say, the soviets... if they heard about our mistake... do you think they would even consider it a mistake? What if they tried to replicate that? The more attention we bring to ourselves, the more... the more people like the Hollands, know the truth, the more likely that scenario becomes. You see why I have to stop the truth from spreading, too. Just, same as those weeds there. By whatever means necessary." A man in a hazmat suit flame throws the vines and shit on the ground and a loud screeching emanates from them.
"So, we understand each other now, do we?"
They eventually escort us out back to the car they apparently fixed because it starts easy peasy now. Nancy clicks a recorder and I realize that this was her plan all along. She recorded the whole thing and honestly I am kind of impressed.
