"What happened to you?" Sage questioned. Her eyebrows furrowed, because despite never liking or talking to Omega's version of Reyna, she could see the amount of pain scorching in her eyes.
Those luminescent eyes that once glowed so bright were completely dimmed. Even though it never should've concerned her, she couldn't help but worry for the twin. She had never seen her own Reyna this drained out.
And despite being gripped by the chin harshly by the twin empress, she didn't fight back.
Omega's Reyna said nothing, though. All she did was bite her lip, holding something back. Almost as if she were.. going to break down on the spot.
Sage stared back, worried for her own safety but also for the twin's. What happened to Omega since their last encounter?
Omega's Reyna opened her mouth to mutter something, but stopped herself. Instead, she loosened her grip on Sage's chin and just stared into her eyes.
Something was there. A longing. A desperate call for reassurance.
But, the twin Reyna suppressed a long audible sigh.
"I've missed nothing more than her face." She muttered under her breath, falling deeper into Sage's gaze, whilst the other raised her eyebrow.
"Whos?" the healer questioned.
But, Reyna shook her head. "Who do you think, mi vida?"
Before Sage could reply to the twin, a gunshot sounded from behind her. It flew past her, and an abrupt grunt could be heard from the twin Reyna. Sage's head flew back to see who had interrupted her conversation with the other, while being half grateful the help still came.
Almost as suddenly as Sage looked back, a familiar green smoke went up. It wasn't from her comrades. It was Omega's Viper. Had she arrived to kill both her and her own comrade?
But, Sage was corrected when Viper appeared from around the corner behind the twin Reyna. The former looked back at the chemist, and nodded an understanding.
"Thank you, Sabine." Omega Reyna grunted through the gunshot that pierced her arm.
The American chemist nodded back silently. "Hurry up. We have limited time, and there could be more than one."
As she said this, she ran to cover both Sage and Reyna. She was in on this. But, what exactly was this twin Reyna trying to do?
Sage turned back to Reyna, noticing that the bleeding had gotten worse and began dripping down her arm from the hole that pierced it. Instinctively, she almost pulled out an orb and let the jade glow run through her hands, but Reyna must've predicted it, as she shook her head.
"Do not waste it." She firmly grunted.
"I know. You have your healer to do it for you."
But, as Sage said that, she noticed how fast Omega Reyna had dropped her gaze. Something in that sentence had turned off something in the duelist. The empress shook her head slowly.
"Not anymore."
"What?" Sage questioned, her eyebrows lifting up once more.
"She's gone." Reyna muttered, distress infiltrating her tone.
It was unsurprising that even a healer would die out on battlefield, but it still managed to surprise Sage. Wouldn't this have affected Omega Earth, especially if they were in the predicament of having seriously wounded protocol members?
"How did she..?" Sage hesitantly questioned, not wanting to anger the empress.
But, the other showed no sign of anger from the question asked.
"It was all my fault." She muttered, while her fists clenched against her palms tightly.
Sage listened intently, trying to figure out just what happened that would be enough to dim the courage and spirit this proud woman had, whether it be in her world or this one.
"There had been a mission." She began, looking straight into Sage's eyes. "All it required was one or two people to scout out a site for us to use for further missions."
She looked away as she continued. "Sage was able to go, and I suggested that I accompany her for her safety, but the commander insisted on training more of our rookies." Anger fired up in her eyes once more.
"Just a few minutes after being up in the sky, something went wrong with the system. We assumed one of yours had hijacked it, but even with Killjoy by Sage's side, they couldn't fix it. Their time was limited."
Reyna's fists were now bleeding from how tightly clenched they were.
"By the time we figured out the problem, it was too late. I was too late." Tears filled up the duelist's eyes. "If only it were her who was resting in the medical bay, injured but still alive."
Sage couldn't hold back the pity and pain she felt for the duelist, knowing that her presumably main source of comfort was gone forever.
"Reyna.. I'm so sorry." Sage muttered, looking at the former with genuine care and worry.
But, the two were interrupted with the chemist from minutes prior coming back with injuries in her arm.
"Reyna, our time is up. We have to go, now." She grunted through her words. "There's too many."
Omega Reyna realized that the chemist was right, because it was soon followed by rapid fired gunshots, nearly hitting the group of three in the process.
Reyna stood up and was about to turn the corner with Viper, but stopped and looked back at Sage.
"I'm sorry. I just.. wanted to see her again." She whispered, sadness piercing the healer's gaze like nothing before.
It pained Sage to see her own world's Reyna upset, so seeing the twin was no different. But, she knew that it wasn't right for the twin to keep seeing her during missions, especially with this rivalry.
But, before Sage knew it, someone had gripped her shoulder firmly from behind, nearly scaring her. She was going to push off the hand, until she felt who's hand it had been. It took her a minute to realize that it had been her lover's.
She looked up at her world's Reyna, who was looking back at her. A smile placed on the empress' face, relieved to know that the healer was safe, or at least in once piece.
Sage stood up and collected herself, before turning around to the corner where she last saw Omega's Viper and Reyna. They were no longer there.
"What was she doing with you?" Reyna demanded, rather than ask. Her tone firm and strict.
"Nothing, just teasing." Sage replied shortly after, brushing some of the dirt off of her battle wear.
Reyna held her glare towards the direction that the pair went to, before looking back at Sage.
"Are you hurt anywhere?" She questioned, her glare softening to a gentle gaze.
Sage smiled back. "Yes, I'm fine. I'm sure I would've healed myself if something were wrong."
"Well, we can all forget at times, can't we?" Reyna suggested, chuckling a bit.
Sage said nothing, rather a soft smile planted itself on her lips, before she ushered for her and her lover to get a move on.
"It's best we leave now. Omega has retreated."
Reyna nodded in agreement, and turned around with her arm wrapped around the healer's hips, escorting her back to their craft.
Despite how comforting the long walk with her lover was back to their respective aircraft, she couldn't help but have a feeling linger within her.
She knew that this would not be the last time that she would come face to face with Omega Earth's Reyna.
But regardless, she brushed it off as best she could and hopped into the craft that now sat a few steps ahead of her. Within minutes, they were off of the site known as Split, and off into the sky to report back to base.
