He stinks of rot. Rot and dirt. That is the only thought in my head right now.
The tall, hulking figure leaned over the gravestone and grunted. His shadow fell over us and I held Mono's hand in a vice grip. I held my breath until he shuffled away. He had a bag behind him, and a waxy yellow hand hung out of a hole. He went to the stone three rows to our left and started digging. We crawled around the stone and snuck between the stones. Every so often he looked up, and we paused behind the stones.
At one point Mono almost got caught, but I grabbed onto him until the Gravedigger turned around. "Uh... Thir..." He mumbled. "Hm?" I asked as the Gravedigger shuffled around. I had my hands on his waist, and his face was glowing red in the dark. "Calm down. What's wrong anyways?" I asked. "Nothing. Let's go." He whispered.
We ran until I saw a shadow. I grabbed Mono's hand and skittered to a stop. Mono jolted to a stop just before he ran into a wrought iron fence covered in barbed wire. "Oh, jeez. Thanks Thirteen." He said. He pecked me on the cheek and I flushed pink. I heard a skittering sound and turned on my heels, arrow pointed directly at Jake. She chittered and pushed the arrow tip away from her. June came out of a bush and hugged my ankle. "Okay. Now we need to find a way to move the tree. Quietly." Mono said, and heavy, thumping footsteps came towards us.
Frantic, I looked around for a hiding spot. There was nothing nearby. "Damnit!" I hissed. We could climb the fence if not for the wire. The wire... FUCK IT!
I winced as I grabbed the barbs with one hand and took scissors out of my pocket. I cut a hole big enough for all of us as blood dripped down my arm. I pushed Mono through carefully, the Nomes skittering through, and crept through just as a shovel hit the dirt behind me. "Everyone okay?" Mono asked, and I looked at myself. "I left half my hand on that fence, but other than that, I'm good."
