Later that night, Kate sent Peter home in an Uber, and then didn't stop trying to call Clint until he walked through the door at precisely 1:45 AM.
"Clint, where the fuck have you been?" Kate slammed her phone down and got up to meet the giddy man at the door. I watched from the couch as she grabbed him by the shoulders, examining him to make sure he didn't have any visible wounds.
"I was just... at the bar... down the street.." Clint said, slurring his words and pointing to his left as if we were outside and could see the street.
"Clint, we were worried sick about you! We thought..." Kate looked back at me over her shoulder, waiting for me to say something. Quickly, I got up and over to Clint, grabbing his elbow to lead him to his room.
"Bye bye Katie!" Clint waved at Kate as I dragged him down the hallway and opened his bedroom door and shoved him through, slamming it behind us.
"Clint, what the actual fuck are you thinking? Staying out this late? You made Kate worried sick!"
"You're not the... boss of me!" He said, sitting down with his back against his bed. He was still slurring his words, making it a little hard to understand whatever bullshit he was saying.
"Look, Clinton. You may not remember this tomorrow," I say, bending down to his level. "But there's a 90% chance you will be murdered by a Black Widow assassin in the next week. So let's keep it safe, hm?" I smiled sarcastically, standing back up and knowing he probably didn't get a word of what I just said. I walked back to his door, looking back over my shoulder one last time. "Goodnight, Clint."
I turned the doorknob and swung the door open, slamming it behind me once again. The smell of smoke started to meet me, and I realized Kate was probably stress-cooking eggs again-or should I say, stress-burning eggs.
"Katie? Are you cooking aga-" I said, stepping out of the hallway and into the living room, being met with the most shocking sight I'd ever seen.
Katherine Elizabeth Bishop was smoking a cigarette.
"What in god's name are you doing?" She looked a lot more relaxed, I'll give her that.
"I'm losing my sober streak, that's what I'm doing," she smiled, putting the cigarette between her pointer and middle finger, taking it out and holding it out to me. "Want a tug?"
I stared at her for a second, seriously considering her offer. "I probably shouldn't..." She shrugged and put the cigarette back up to her mouth. "I'm gonna head to bed... you probably should too," I inched closer to her and took the cigarette from her.
"Hey-I didn't finish that!" she said, trying to reach for it before I took off running to the balcony doors. I twisted with the weird lock for a second before sliding open the door. Kate had to be close as I got the door open and stepped through, throwing the white stick off the balcony as hard as I could. I thought I was going to tip over the balcony as Kate came barreling up behind me, pushing me against the railing. She was gonna kill me, or at the very least, break one of my ribs. She grabbed my waist, spinning me around to face her. She kept her grip on my waist and kept me pressed up against the railing, making me terrified she was going to push me off. I'd never seen her this way before. It was a little scary.
"You're a bitch, you know that?" She was still panting heavily-her breath was hot and smokey-smelling. It was almost suffocating. "First you basically put my best friend on death penalty and then you won't let me cope? What's your fucking angle? I thought you liked me, but apparently not." I stared back at her, saying nothing in response and trying not to cry. I was just trying to help her. I didn't want her to end up like everyone else I had grown up with. Jumping from cigarettes to alcohol to drugs."Nothing to say? Really, (Y/N)? No snarky comeback?" I swallowed, staying silent and hoping she would give up and go to bed. I took a shaky deep breath as she finally let go of me and walked back through the balcony door.
I reached back for the railing, holding it behind me and taking a few more deep breaths until they started to feel normal again. Finally, I headed for the open balcony door, closing it and locking it behind me. It was only when I turned away from the door that I realized Kate was in the kitchen, leaning with her elbows on the table and her head in her hands. She picked her head up a little when she realized I had finally come back in. "(Y/N)... I'm-" I didn't let her get anything more than that out. I turned away and walked quickly down the hall to my room, locking the door behind me.
I pushed my back against the door and slid slowly down it until I was on the floor. I felt the tears start to fall down my face as I heard a knock at the window. I looked up and bit my cheek when I realized who it was. Quickly, I stood up and wiped the tears off my cheeks, and walked over to open the window.
"Can I come in?"
