Cheryl Blossom was a shy teenager when she met Toni Topaz by chance one summer day. Their friendship blossomed to more, but Cheryl was too afraid to be herself; who she truly was. But she did it for Toni.

Cheryl Blossom watched her ex girlfriend - if she could even call her that - dancing with Reggie Mantle of all people.

That should be me.

Should be, Cheryl. But you know you can't.

She crossed her arms over her chest as she leaned against the wall of the high school gym. Toni looked so beautiful in her yellow dress. Cheryl wasn't even sure where her date was, and quite frankly, she didn't really care. She watched as her friends danced and laughed together, not really even sure that she could call them her friends.

All she could think about was the last conversation her and Toni had.

-

"Cheryl, I can't keep doing this. Living this lie and having a secret relationship. I understand that you don't want to come out, but I can't keep hiding."

"I can't Toni. My parents would kill me if they knew."

"So I'm just supposed to stand in the sidelines watching guys grope you and make out with you?"

Tears started to gather in Cheryl's eyes. Her chest felt heavy - like there was a cinder block weighing her down. She couldn't believe this was happening.

"Toni, I-"

"You what, Cheryl?!"

"I'm sorry."

"So that's it? Just like that?" Toni was now crying. A sob fell through her beautiful lips.

Cheryl took a step closer, trying to reach for Toni's hands. They were so soft and she just wanted to feel the other girl's hands in her own again.

"No, Cheryl. If this was the other way around - if I was the one hiding and making out with other people - you'd be livid. We both know that. I'm done."

Toni left the party and that was the last conversation they had. Cheryl drank herself into the worst hangover she had ever had. That was a month ago.

-

Cheryl wiped a stray tear from her cheek as she sniffled. She couldn't be crying at fucking Homecoming.

"So, Reggie and Toni. I didn't see that coming."

Cheryl rolled her eyes. Reggie and Toni had been talking in the hallway for weeks. Of course Cheryl noticed. "What do you want, Jason?"

Her twin stood next to her and leaned against the wall. "Just trying to figure out why my favorite sister is so mopey on one of the biggest nights of our high school careers."

Cheryl chuckled, "I'm your only sister, JJ."

"And that's why you're my favorite," he laughed. "But seriously... what's gotten into you? I didn't want to pry, but you've been moping around for a few weeks now. I figured you would tell me eventually, but you never did."

Cheryl sighed and turned her head to her brother. She really didn't want to come out, especially to someone she was related to. The only person that knew was Toni. "I...was seeing someone and we broke up," she said slowly.

Jason tilted his head a little to the side and shoved his hands in his suit pockets. He then looked out to the crowd and then back to his sister. "Reggie?"
