TW: Details of conversion therapy. One scene is a bit more graphic than the others, but it's not incredibly graphic, if that makes sense.
Cheryl was eating breakfast with her parents on a Wednesday morning when there had been a knock on the door. She looked up in surprise, not missing the sinister look on her mother's face, while her father kept a rather calm look on his own.
She didn't know what was happening, but she was suddenly terrified when a woman walked in, wearing a long black skirt and a brown cardigan, her hair done up in a bun style that you only see on old, churchgoing women. She had two, large men behind her who were both wearing white scrubs.
Normally, the younger redhead would have made some snarky comment wearing brown with black, but she found herself speechless, for once in her life.
"Cheryl, dear," her mother smiled, placing her hands on the back of the chair she had just been sitting in. "This is Sister Woodhouse. You'll be joining her at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy for the summer."
"For why?" Cheryl asked, furrowing her eyebrows, trying to understand what was happening.
Her father was the first to speak, "We've heard a few of your phone conversations, Cheryl. And we're aware of the girl you've been writing to since that awful pen pal assignment. You'll be leaving for Harvard soon and we won't have it."
"Yes, dear. You'll be going with the Sisters to help make you pure and not so...deviant," her mother smiled.
"That's right. We'll make you all better," Sister Woodhouse informed her. She sounded sweet, but Cheryl knew better.
She couldn't find it in her to form a sentence, her brain felt like it was frying. Short circuiting beyond repair.
"You have ten minutes to gather your things." Her mother had told her.
Ten minutes? That's all? She slowly stood and made her way to her bedroom. She locked the door and grabbed a duffle bag to throw her in her clothes, essentials, but not everything. She didn't have a good feeling about any of this. Her mother said they were going to make her pure.
Fuck.
Cheryl's eyes widened with the realization that her parents found out. They found out that she was gay and she was going with Sister Woodhouse to God knows where to fix her? They wouldn't dare.
But they are, Cheryl. You can't really be surprised.
Fuck.
She needed to call Toni. She quickly found her contact and hit the call button as she placed around her room, waiting for Toni to answer. She called her friend four times before Toni finally answered.
"Cher? It's like...stupid early."
Toni wasn't wrong. It was around six in the morning, her time, but Cheryl forgot about timezones for a split second and fuck it, this was important.
"Toni. Please listen to me." Cheryl could feel the tears threatening to spill as her throat was constricting. "I know it's early, but I only have a few minutes. My awful parents are sending me away for the summer to some nunnery. I'm not sure when I'll be making it to Portland, but I'll let you know as soon as I can. I think they must have found out that-"
"Cheryl," her mother knocked on her door, "Sister Woodhouse is waiting."
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
