THINGS BAD BEGUN

October 27th, 2010

Nick and Troy stayed behind at the trading post. We made it to the dam. Me, Madison and Victor were all drinking scotch as we looked into the distance. We were on the damn

"What do you see?" Victor asked

"Water" I said

"Murky mud pit presided over by a lonely old man and his little fool" Madison said

"We can clearly see the difference in your views. Bleak much, Madison? See past that, you too, Y/n. See corn, melons, beans, irrigation, agriculture, cattle, and you miss the manure. Country Madison, that's what you said you wanted, isn't it?" Victor asked

"I wanted a future for my kids. Or maybe even some grandkids to spoil" Madison said. Victor looked at me with a smile before he remembered

"You're shit out of luck with me and Nick" I said

"There's always Alicia" Victor said

"Christmas mornings surrounded by babies. I make a damn good roast turkey" Madison said

"I figured you went for sandwiches. Bologna and cheese" Victor said

"That's no Christmas. No, turkey, gravy, stuffing, you name it. Family tradition. I used to make iced angel cookies with the kids. Just thought we'd have that at the ranch" Madison said

"We can have that here" Victor said

"My kids are gone" Madison said

"We'll build a paradise for them to come home to. Come on, picture it. We'll create it" Victor said

"Here?" Madison asked

"You just need a little more liquid imagination" Victor said as he handed Madison the bottle of scotch. She drank from it

"If you insist" She said

"I do. I do insist" Victor said

T

he three of us were tipsy

"You got two options in life, Victor. You can be lonely, or irritated" Madison said as she handed Victor the bottle

"A little broken hearted" Victor said

"That's a type of lonely" Madison said

"Disappointed" Victor said before taking a drink

"Type of irritated" Madison said as Victor handed me the bottle. I took a drink

"You can't blame your children for striking out on their own" Victor said
