Angelie's POV:

The moment I woke up from that unfamiliar room, everything started to feel very confusing. I even felt like I am inside a dream that I can't seem to get out of, but that only lasted for a few days because my father explained everything to me.

So far, all I know is that we are not at the actual campsite but instead we're at the community of Remnants. My father was very calm about it, which confused me at first because I know how the Council despises the Remnants. Me? I was also calmed about it because they were the ones who took us in and helped me recover.

The Remnants are actually not bad people, although I can't say the same about their attitude, especially to that girl who I later knew by the name of Chantel who became distant and quite rude to me in the past few days.

I don't know if it is just me but something about her makes me want to get her attention, but it seems like she's not interested. Well, her loss.

I am currently helping the elderly wash clothes when this girl offered to help me, I was thinking that she got the message that I don't need help but the girl kept on insisting and told me that I am still in my recovery stage. She's right, but all I did in the past few days was to sleep, eat, stare blankly at the view of the ocean, and talk with the sickeningly sweet couple.

"Please, being under the sun for too long might be not good for you."

I sighed and released the clothes I was about to wash. I stood up and the girl followed behind me, I was about to tell her to get lost but that will be too rude.

"Yes? Do you need something?" I politely said.

The girl laughed and shook her head. "Now I see why she took interest in you."

What now?

The girl must have seen how confused I am but she didn't speak anymore, so I started to walk again. I ignored her the whole time I aimlessly walked around the place, but she was still following me behind.

I was ready to unleash my irritation on the girl when someone decided to talk to her. It was the same woman who has been in my mind in the past few days whom I still can't figure out why she's talking nicely to others while she's treating me differently.

"I will be right there." I overheard the girl reply to Chantel.

Chantel gave me a small glance before walking away, the girl excused herself and followed Chantel somewhere. I internally rejoiced because I can finally be alone.

"Kalia! Anne!" I called out when I saw them going in the same direction where the girl and Chantel went.

"Hey, are you feeling good? Do you need something?"

"Better, actually, but I do need to ask you something."

"We're all ears," Kalia replied that making me smile in thankfulness.

"What's the deal with Chantel?"

They both confusedly looked at me.

"What's the deal with Chantel?" Anne repeated my question.

Kalia decided to excuse herself that left Anne alone to answer my question. Anne took both of us somewhere that doesn't have a lot of people around.

"Tell me what happened." Anne prompted both of her elbows at the top of her knees.

"Well, it's just that she kept on acting rude around me. She won't even smile back! I mean, she was the one who hugged me that day as she knew me..." I trailed off as my mind traveled back to that particular day.

"Why are you suddenly so worked up about her anyway? You like her, don't you?" Anne nudged my arm and showed me a playful smirk.

"Me? Chantel is way out of my league." I scoffed.

Anne kept her smirk and I scolded her about it. "Trust me, she's not. Why don't you talk to her later?"

That's also the problem, I can't find the guts to speak to her.

"Can you help me?"

I saw Anne happily nod her head. "I am so glad that you are feeling better."

"Thanks."

I let Anne go back to where she needs to be right now. When I walked back to my room, I noticed that there are only a few people left outside. I swear there are countless of them roaming around earlier, then suddenly some of them just disappeared.

I put a halt to my plan to just go to my room and sleep, I maneuvered and went to where I thought they all went to. Wherever they went, they surely know to keep the kids away because I am not seeing any kids playing from here.

I was almost near to the suspicious cabin when I overheard voices not so far from where I am standing. I followed it and found myself in the middle of a serious talking between my father and all the Remnants.

"Wait for the signal of Kalia and then all of you can go inside."

"Right, but one of you has to get a keycard first."

My eyes widened as my father brought out a box full of keycards from the Council.

"Kalia, Leroy, and Mara will be at the laboratory with me. Chantel and Anne will be at the security room to disable the cameras....where's Chantel?"

I watch them turn their heads around to find the presence of Chantel but none of them saw her.

"Anyway, let's do a round of sound checks."

I decided to end my eavesdropping there because I already got a quiet amount of information as to why they all suddenly disappeared and seemed busy all day.

While they were testing the devices, I backed away and turned around to go back to my room but there was someone blocking my way. I had to look up a bit to see who it was and saw the face of someone I was dreading to talk to.

"Great, you're here, come with me."
