"So who fired the shot?"

That was the big question. We saw no signs of anyone still alive here. If there were, then we wouldn't hve pushed through. We wouldn't have even entered here!

Immediately, I felt my chest tighten. I reached for Roone's hand as flashes of Mama and Nova crossed my eyes. He doesn't say a word as he gives a small squeeze in return. His free hand goes to Saphi's collar, getting a firm hold on it as he places her between him. Taking note, the rest of us to the same. Can't have them running off.

"If this were a trap we're already in it the minute we walked in. That window broke on its own, it wasn't done intentionally.." Riva starts.

Fredi looks around at the carnage. "Yeah, and from the looks of things here it seems like a either someone was bitten or a fire somehow broke out. Either way it was an accident. It could be survivors."

Roone looks over at me, gaging me for any sort of reaction or if I would say no. Truthfully, I want to say fuck no. We made a pact a while back that it was just going to be just us four but it seems that at every turn, the world kept tossing people our way. Yet, this asshole/s did save Riva's life.

Ugh.

A shrug of my shoulders is all of a response that I can muster. It shouldn't soley be on me to make that decision. But since they're all looking at me still I guess I need to be the one to call out.

"Look, we're grateful for the assist. If you're worried about our dogs, we promise we won't let them hurt you. You can come on out but don't try anything. You can stay put too, we'll just be on our way." I shout not too loudly.

For a while we heard nothing. All their ears were up and moving in different directions to see if they picked up anything but there was no indication that they did. At the sound of the young voice above we all turned around ready to fire if we needed to.

"How do we know we can trust you?"

She was on the rooftop of the building where all those freshies came out of. Couldn't have been more than twenty years old. Her weapon wasn't pointed at us but clearly visible. A military rifle of some kind. We know she knows how to handle it. Hold on...

"Because we lowered our weapons instead of shooting you. Now you said we, who else is up there with you?" I replied. It may have a little too honest but I wasn't about to play games here.

Removing her gaze from my own to whoever was sitting down behind the wall, she stretched out her hand. A larger one took hold pulling themselves up. Male. He was slightly taller than her but definitely younger. Must be in his teens. He gave us a small smile and wave.

"It's just me and my brother here. We have no way of getting down. Those things were hot on our tail in the staircase, barely made it up here. There's no ladder out here, so we've been stuck up here. Assuming since you guys are safely talking down there, it's safe to come down?"

Fredi took Blackie and headed into the building. I stayed put with Jack, keeping an eye on them two. Roone and Riva with their two are covering in case there were any stragglers or if any others had heard the noise were coming. Everything for the most part was quiet. We could faintly hear their footsteps and claws echoing in the halls from inside.

About five minutes later, both of them come out.
"It's all good to come down. Just be careful, the stairs are pretty slippery." he informed them.

All three of us look at him and he just shrugs as if to say What? It's just being nice. Honestly, it amazed me the way Fredi and Riva could be both have the ability to switch from caring and concerning to will drop you without hesitation in a blink of an eye.

The two of them pull away from the roof's edge, gathering whatever they had up there with them. Within a minute, they were both exiting the structure and were standing right in front of us. I'm sure we aren't magazine cover worthy but they look like they went through some hell. Our clothes had old blood stains that despite all the rain washing were never coming out but theirs...

That blood couldn't have been more than a day old and given that it looked to be more from human, it was a really vivid contrast on their clothes. It could be a problem. They would be able to be detected much quicker.

"Do you guys have any other clothes that you could wear?" I ask. Please say yes, please say yes...

She doesn't nod her head but she doesn't shake it either. "We might. We've been here since all this started. Dad packed everything that could fit into our car and drove us until it was no longer safe to drive. All the cars are on the other side of this camp."

None of us could keep the shock from our faces. How the hell have they survived this long just staying in one place? I mean sure, I have no doubt that there are camps or strongholds whatever you want to call them out there in the world but for one have lasted going on two years now? It's insane. Almost impossible to hear. However this also has me internally groaning.

If these two have been here this whole time, just how much do they know about how to survive? Do they even have the energy and stamina to be constantly on the move? What if..

"Probably a really stupid question but do you guys have anywhere to go? Any plans?" Fredi asked.

Thankfully it wasn't just me. The three of us turned to look at him as if he were crazy.

"Let's just take you to your car, if it's still here. After that, we can talk some more." Roone finally spoke.

Silently, we all walked towards where they said they had their car.
