Roone's Pov*
A wet snout was pushing up against my cheek, trying to get my attention. I thought it was Saphira just moving about until a paw smacked me right on chin. When I opened my eyes I saw Duke whining. I was still rubbing the sleep from my eyes when I saw my brother was out of the chair and had his shotgun in hand.
That woke me up faster.
Pushing my sunglasses up higher, I sat up and grabbed my own rifle. Me standing was enough to wake Saphira but I quickly gestured for her to stay put.
"Riva, what's going on?" I whisper to him as I double check the hall.
"Something is moving up in there. Duke gave warning," still aiming towards what I think was the vent, "it sounds like scratching and thumping. It was getting closer but it suddenly stopped."
I tried to hear for the scratching and thumping but I heard nothing. Looking back up above the doors I see other vents that are out here in the hall and slowly walked up to them to see if maybe whatever was in there had moved to this section of the interior.
Silently moving passed my brother I check the two closest to our room. I was about to ask him if he wanted to grab the chair to get a better view when rapid loud thumping came running down the one that I was facing and some furry thing jumped out of the vent.
I couldn't help the scream that slipped out as my face was being clawed at.
"Fuck Roone!" my brother screams.
I could hear everyone else jumping to their feet. Finally getting a grip on its small body I fling it across the hall. It's hit the wall hard, leaving a bit of blood behind but it quickly got to its feet and started sprinting back towards me. Halfway on its course it was shot dead by my brother.
Wincing in pain, I got up and went looking for my rifle when I heard more of the scratching and thumping but a lot more than just one. It was like watching a pot boil over so much it spills.
"Get back! Dukino, come!" Riva shouted again as he started blasting at the oncoming swarm of them.
Rushing out my rifle, I run back to the room where everyone was already ready to fight. I'm sure the blood running down my face, neck and arms had them wanting asking questions. The second my brother and Duke get inside the room I shut the door and place the chair under the door handle. Immediately the door was bombarded with clawing and their bodies clashing against one another.
"Let me see your arms," Mara gingerly looks me over trying to access the damage, "Kailee go to my bag and get some gauze, we need to stop the bleeding and make sure that the smell doesn't get any stronger."
"What the heck is at the door guys?" Boaz cried out.
Fredi and Riva were guarding the door as the assault on it continued. I could see the little paws scampering from underneath the door.
"Eergh, rats. They looked like rats and came in from the vents but there was something wrong with them. The one that attacked had a lot of its hair missing like... well like when a dog gets mange or whatever the hell that disease is called." I tell them. It was fucking weird.
"Did it bite you?"
Before I could answer, Mara does. "No, these all look like scratches. I don't see any teeth marks." She tilts my head to the sides trying to get a good look at my neck. Her head shakes as she tapes the last piece of gauze to the left side of my neck. My face, even though it stings doesn't seem bleeding like my neck and arms which I'm really happy for.
Kailee finally speaks up, "What do we do? There's no other room in here besides the bathroom and aren't we making a bunch of noise? There's still sun out, would it be safe if we leave?"
Mara finishes with me and goes over to Kailee, pulling her in for a quick hug.
"Shh, three deep breaths for me..." I get up and check the windows. She's right. We still have a few hours of sunlight left and we're making a bunch of noise. "Atta girl, now I want you to check around the room and the bathroom and see if there are any vents in here so that we can cover them. Alright?"
Exactly as she was told, Kailee took a few deep breaths and then set off to do what Mara had told her. Boaz on the other hand looked stiff. He was still frozen. Taking the same approach as my girl, I call for him.
"Hey Bo, help me with the windows would ya?"
He came over right away but his eyes nearly popped out of his eyes when he looked outside. I didn't want to say anything to freak him and sister out more but there was no way to hide it. We had called attention the to the building. There were some dead gathering outside. Some were coming in from the woods. Others were just wandering the street but are now making their way here.
"Mara!!"
Kailee screamed from the bathroom. The sounds of scratching and metal scraping against the floor was hard to miss. They were attempting to get in form another place.
"Kai..."
"Bo! Look at me," I try to get his attention, "I need you to help me here so we can try and clear a way so we can get out of here. Now make me proud, show me how good of a teacher I am."
All I get is a nod in response but he kneels down on the second window with his gun. I could see the little bit of shaking in his grip and his breathing is unsteady.
"Remember, control breathing. Don't rush to shoot, choose your shots carefully." I remind him.
Opening the window I bring my rifle up to aim and follow my own instruction. About the same time that I pull the trigger, so do my brother and Mara.
Hello my lovelies, I hope you're still enjoying the story. Who's point of view do you like the most? Anyone you want to see more of? Also, anybody got any theories on anything? I'm always up to hearing those.
Or if you just have any questions or just want to chat about the book I'm always available. I really am trying to be more diciplined with my schedule posting but sometimes other things take precedent like my health. I am more than grateful and overjoyed that I'm taking chemo so well but I did have one week where it had to withheld so that my body could recuperate more. That was a little scary.
So if there are times when you feel that I'm no posting enough or faster, please kwow it is not because I simply just haven't written anything. I am just making sure that I am keeping my health in check.
