Devouring Flames (Day 29)

Today I woke up to the sound smell of smoke and my parents yelling. This is a good thing I swear! Well other than me having to wake up way earlier than usual.

"It's still dark outside. Five more minutes." I moaned, not opening my eyes.

"YOUR ROOM IS ON FIRE BETHANY! GET OUT BED!" My dad screamed back. This is where I would say something like 'I shot out of bed, looking around me in terror as the flames consumed my room,' but that would be a lie. Instead I groggily got up and walked out of my room. I went downstairs, popped some waffles in the toaster and sat there waiting. Only when my parents came downstairs, ash on their face and hair looking extremely disappointed in me did I actually realize what happened.

"I got my powers!" I yelled, jumping around the room in excitement, until my feet didn't touch the ground. I was floating. I had two powers!

"You're going to be sleeping in the air tonight, because half your room is now ashes." My dad said blandly. Let me explain the whole, nonchalantly lighting things on fire and levitation business. My best friend's family and mine are from really prestigious magical families, for some reason. Maybe they were elves or something I can't really remember to be honest. Basically humans don't have magic but since we aren't fully humans we get powers at a certain age, kind of like puberty but it happens later and it isn't as annoying. Now that I think about it I need to tell Sierra!

I catch my waffles as they pop out of the toaster and bolt, or should I say float out the door. Well maybe I shouldn't say float, I tried but i just ended up spinning in place and I got so dizzy that I stopped and stumbled to her house.

Sierra loves the outdoors and nature so I figured that she'd probably be in her backyard, if not in the forest but I checked her house first. I half jumped half floated over her fence and there she was humming to herself and watering her garden.

"Hey Sierra I guess what! I–"

"You got your powers. I know I saw the smoke." She interrupted nonchalantly. I know I just explained how it's completely normal but the way she said it made it seem like it's no big deal. She didn't even look at me.

"Well I can levitate too... see?" I said as my feet left the ground, I did a few flips involuntarily before landing back on the ground less than gracefully.

"Good for you Beth," She said and that was it. Sierra went back to humming, leaving me there just standing.

"Why aren't you happy for me? I–I planned an entire party when you got yours! You haven't even looked at me," I said annoyance welling up inside of me. She stared at me deadpanned.

"Life just really hates me right now doesn't it. I lose my powers and less than a week later you get yours." She said envy seeping into her tone.

That was it? She's acting like this because she lost her powers! I know losing her powers was hard on her. I probably cried more than her last night. She could at least congratulate me or something!

"This isn't all about you Sierra! Someone cursed you, I know! You could at least try to act like you're happy for me!" I yell. She glares back at me, her jaw clenched and her hands shaking.

"I'll celebrate you when you use your powers and get mine back! Oh wait, you can't even control your fire without burning your house down! Maybe you should just float away." She hissed and walked into her house. I stood there, my hands balled into fists, trembling. Big fat tears ran down my face. Before I knew it I was running, over the fence and into the forest. That's where Sierra went before she lost her powers. That's where I was going to go to get them back. Sure maybe it was partly to see her happy again, but I would be lying if it wasn't to prove I'm not an incompetent leach.
