Kyle pushed through the bushes as he dragged Charles to some unknown destination. Despite his look of indifference, the thief was actually somewhat interested in where he was being led to. Ever since Kyle wandered off when they first set up camp, he's had a sort of sparkle in his eyes, one of childlike wonder. Even when questioned by both Sasha and Charles, he somehow didn't spill a word. It reminded Charles of his childhood. Why am I thinking of that now? He thought, before getting jerked forward completely out of the blue.
"it should be right about... here!" The mage exclaimed. Finally, after what was probably half an hour Charles would see what amazed Kyle so much. He was easy to please, so Charles tried not to expect much but his mind couldn't help but wander to what it might be. If he was lucky, there could be magical artifacts, priceless treasures or even just a comfortable place to sleep. He pushed the last branch away and saw nothing.
"Look! This place is beautiful isn't it? Just look at how vibrant everything is!" Kyle yelled, twirling around in pure bliss. Charles looked around but he couldn't name a thing that was making Kyle so giddy. They were standing in an opening in the forest, trees and bushes surrounding the young men like a fortress. Inside were a field of flowers of all different colors. Kyle was right, the place is vibrant and pretty, but was this what he was so excited about?
"Wow, this is amazing!," Charles responded, his voice laced with sarcasm, "I've never seen so many trees before, it's not like we've been living in a forest for several weeks." Kyle looked back, pouting back at Charles but his excitement was still there, practically radiating from him. Charles almost had to shield his eyes.
"I know, I know, you're a renowned thief who's seen the sights and is never in the same place twice, this is probably way too boring for you. But just stop and feel this place, it's so freeing," he said wistfully, looking up at the sky. Charles, with a shit eating grin on his face, picked up some dirt, kneaded it between his fingers, and then caressed Kyle's arm with that same hand.
"Why don't you feel it too? I don't want to be the only one having all the fun." He teased.
"You know that's not what I meant!" Kyle sprang back, brushing the dirt off his pale skin. Despite slight annoyance on his face, his pointy ears were tinged pink. "Just look around, smell the flowers, doesn't the cool breeze feel just like casting a spell?"
Kyle didn't seem like he was going to let it go, so Charles closed his eyes and breathed. He instantly felt relaxed, like nothing he's felt before. All the tension he didn't even know he had was gone. Despite not knowing what he meant by spellcasting, the breeze did feel familiar. Kyle was right, Charles felt free.
"See, I told you how amazing this place is! Thank Aemillios we camped so close to here." He said. Charles was about to ask how he could tell how he felt until he noticed he was smiling ever so softly. This place is affecting him, he was letting his guard down.
"More like thank Sasha complaining about how much her feet hurt. So, is this the only reason we're here? Y'know if I wanted to relax, I would've asked for a massage." Then Kyle grabbed his hand, leading him to the middle of the opening, where he laid down, and gestured for Charles to lay down as well.
"Well, we've been traveling together for a long while now and I don't really know much about you or Sasha, I want to invite her here later but right now, I want to know more about you," That surprised Charles. Out of all the things he thought Kyle would say, that wasn't one of them. I guess he's right, I don't really know who he is.
"Fine, ask away, nothing personal, and nothing weird got that? Also any question you ask, you also have to answer, I'm not telling my entire life story unless you do,"
"Actually?" Kyle gasped, turning his head to Charles, he hummed in response, "I actually didn't think you'd agree! Okay let's start simple: What's your favorite color?"
"Isn't it obvious," The thief's clothes were almost all black except for his undershirt and the bandana around his neck, which were both a forest green. Even green streaks could be seen in his ebony black hair matching his emerald eyes. "Its green, your turn,"
"You know the sky right before it's about to set, that color."
"So dark blue in more words. What's next?"
"Why don't you ask this time, we can go back and forth until sunset. Same rules, though, just so it's fair."
"Damn, so I can't ask about your nonexistent sex life, ya should've told me earlier so I could prepare questions." Charles chuckled, taking a quick glance at Kyle, his face was a deep shade of pink. "You clearly like this place, so what's your favorite flower?"
"Huh, I've never really thought of that. All the flowers here are beautiful but I think dandelions have to be my favorite."
"Let me guess, because they look just like you," He joked. Kyle was scrawny and tall, like the stem of a flower, and his hair blonde, so bright it might as well be yellow, like a dandelion's bud. But when Kyle responded, the traces of excitement in his voice were gone, almost sad, even with the smile still on his face.
"No, is it weird that I kind of relate to them? Just a weed, only here to take up space. I'm a weakling, a leach." Unlike how Kyle usually spoke, he didn't stutter once, like he'd repeated it several times before. The air around them became tense, not even the breeze could break the tension, there was only silence. Charles was becoming annoyed.
"I thought you brought me here to relax and get to know each other, not have a pity party. Also why since when were we allowed to lie about your answers? You don't just take up space, you annoy the hell out of me everyday! If you weren't smart I would've abandoned you ages ago." He ranted. Then Kyle made a sound. A small sound that slowly grew louder. Damn it, is he crying? Charles thought, turning to Kyle, but Charles was wrong. Kyle couldn't stop giggling.
"Is this your way of telling me to leave you alone or trying to cheer me up, I can't even tell?" Kyle sat up catching his breath, still laughing between words. Then he looked up at the sky, it was just before sunset, Kyle's favorite color. "We should get back before Sasha thinks we got lost." He stood up, holding his hand out to Charles who took it, causing him to stumble. Charles let out a chuckle, Kyle's ears were pink.
They began to walk back to camp, Kyle leading the way. Their campfire could be seen behind the greenery, but then Kyle stopped. He stared at Charles, taking a deep breath, "I want to tell you something," he said. But when he tried to speak he kept stuttering.
"You like me, right?"
"WHAT! I- NO, Why would you think that?," He yelped, laughing awkwardly, covering his face with his hands. Charles began to laugh uncontrollably.
"Why would you think that? Sure I'm good at reading people but for you, I don't even have to! You're not just an open book, you're a children's book!" He said still laughing, even more than Kyle was just a few minutes earlier. He swiped a tear from his eye and regained his composure. He slowly walked toward Kyle, as Kyle slowly walked backwards, every part of him flushed bright red. Kyle's back hit a tree, allowing Charles to trap him. Charles lifted his chin and caressed Kyle's face. With a smirk dancing on his lips, he leaned in and whispered into Kyle's ear.
"You have terrible taste," Then he backed away holding his hands behind his head. 1, 2, 3.
"I heard yelling, what the hell are you guys doing? Kyle! Thankfully Charles didn't murder you while you both were gone, I need you for something. Stop forcing yourself on that tree and come here" Sasha yelled, waiting for Kyle to dazedly stumble towards her, before dragging him away, leaving Charles behind.
Charles chuckled to himself, running a hand through his hair. He didn't actually think that was what Kyle wanted to say to him. He was sure about his feelings but so soon, Kyle didn't seem like the type to confess at all. He thought back to the day he just had. Sure it wasn't a priceless artifact or a magic item but it was more interesting than he ever anticipated. He walked through the trees, looking at Sasha and Kyle bickering and a small thought ran through his head, Cute.
