It was a long, heavy day for both of them. To sleep together was never in their plan but they ended up sleeping in the same bed the night. Valouise lays down the bed asleep with Bylur's arm as her pillow while his other hand is on her waist.
Bylur groaned when he felt his hand stiffened. Gagalaw na saba siya nang maalala n'yang katabi n'ya pala si Valouise. Dahan-dahan n'yang idinilat ang mga mata at bumungad sa kaniya ang tulog-mahimbing na si Valouise. Hindi na diay gumalaw at baka magising pa ito. With his eyes half opened, he smiled seeing how adorable she was while sleeping. Her lashes were long, her slightly pink cheeks puffing and pouting lips — she looks like a baby.
Nawala ang ngiti sa mga labi n'ya nang maalala ang nangyaring away nila. Hinawakan nya ang buhok nito at nilaro habang nakatitig pa rin siya sa mukha nito.
I'm sorry for ruining your life for the second time.
Dahan-dahang nabalot ng lungkot at konsensya si Bylur habang iniisip ang mga making desisyon n'ya simula noon pa.
All I wanted was to protect everyone. Especially you.
He took a deep breath and sighed. He shifted on the bed and stared at the empty ceiling, thinking of the same thing over and over again. Her mind was like a broken tape, those scenes kept on repeating and repeating. It made him anxious and he almost had a panic attack. He closed his eyes and held his head with one hand.
Bylur, get yourself together! Stop thinking about it!
He was about to lose it. He was about to cry and get mad but all of those emotions backed down when he felt her warm hand was placed on his chest.
Valouise groaned and suddenly talked. That's when he realized that she's awake.
“Are you okay?” She asked with her raspy voice. Bylur was caught off guard and felt his ears heated. He turned to face her and held her waist once again.
Bylur looked at her and nodded as a response to her question. Valouise looked at him with her sleepy, half opened eyes.
“Are you sure? You were breathing fast and uneasy.” Valouise whispered as she caressed his left chest where his heart is. Hinawakan ni Bylur ang kamay ni Valouise at nilagay ito sa pisngi n'ya.
“I'm fine now.” Sagot nito at hinalikan ang kamay ni Valouise. Pagkatapos ay mahigpit n'ya itong niyakap.
“Just go back to sleep. Masyado pang maaga.” Bulong ni Bylur dito na tinanguan lang ni Valouise. Ilang segundo pa ay bumagal at mas payapa na, ibig sabihin ay nakatulog na ulit ito. Napangiti si Bylur at naghintay siya ng ilang minuto hanggang sa humimbing ang tulog nito. Nang mahimbing na ito, agad siyang tumayo para simulan ang araw.
He went to his room and washed his face, brushed his teeth, then changed his clothes with a tank top, running shorts and sneakers, and took his water bottle and earphones. He went out for a jog as part of his routine and at the same time to calm and freshen his mind.
Tatlumpung minuto ang nakalipas at bumalik na siya sa bahay. Bumungad sa kaniya ang mabango at nakakatakam na amoy. Nagmadali siyang pumunta sa kusina at natagpuang nagluto si Valouise.
“Hey!” pagtawag pansin ni Bylur dito.
“Hey! Good morning!” balik na pagbati ni Valouise rito at nilingon siya. She smiled upon seeing him. Her gentle and warm smile could soften and melt glaciers. She looks so graceful, sweet and happy. And he wishes it's always like this.
“Buti naman hindi ka na topless.” Hirit ni Valouise rito at binalik ang tingin sa niluluto.
“Ay, bakit? Didn't you like that?” Biro ni Bylur at napailing na lang si Valouise. Natahimik sila ng ilang segundo pero agad naman itong binasag ni Bylur.
“Well, what a waste. I thought I could see you with your nightdress.” He flirtatiously said and sexily chuckled. Hindi agad umimik si Valouise sa sinabi ng lalaki.
“Tumahimik ka nga!” Pikon na tugon nito. Mahinang tumawa si Bylur at nilapitan ito.
“What are you cooking?” He whispered to her ear. Her lips close to her temple. He kissed her temple and looked at the dish she was cooking.
“Giniling. It's been a while since I had Filipino food. Napansin ko lang din na palaging American food niluluto mo.” Sagot ni Valouise rito.
“Oh!” Tanging tugon ni Bylur at napakamot sa kaniyang batok.
“It's my first time cooking for us too. Lagi kasing ikaw.” Dagdag mi Valouise at napangiti na lang. Sumandal sa refrigerator si Bylur at tinitigan lang ang dalaga habang nagluluto ito.
“I've realized many things last night.” She said and looked at him as she chuckled.
“Lagi ikaw nagluluto, puro tayo american or foreign foods tapos wala pa ako masyadong alam tungkol sa'yo maliban sa may kapangyarihan ka at sobrang yaman mo.” Birong saad ni Valouise.
“Right… we haven't talked too much about ourselves.”
“Right?” Valouise said and shook her head in disbelief.
“Ilang buwan na tayo magkasama pero wala pa rin ako masyadong alam sa'yo.” Valouise said in a joking tone but the bitterness she was trying to hide was visible.
“I'm almost done! Go wash yourself muna. Tapusin ko lang ito para makakain na tayo.”
“Okay! I'll be quick.” Sagot naman ni Bylur at agad na tumungo sa kwarto n'ya. Tinapos na ni Valouise ang kaniyang niluto at hinain na ito. After a few minutes, Bylur went down, freshly washed and cleaned. He was wearing his typical white oversized shirt and sweatshorts.
“Kain na tayo.” Sambit ni Valouise at umupo na. Agad namang umupo si Bylur sa tapat n'ya.
“What's this called again?” Tanong ni Bylur at tinuro ang niluto ni Valouise.
“Giniling. That's ground pork with mixed vegetables and quail eggs.” Sagot naman ni Valouise.
“‘Yong canned mixed veggies lang ginamit ko kasi wala na tayong gulay eh.” Dagdag nito.
“This looks so good!” Sambit ni Bylur at kumuha na ng pagkain. Napangiti si Valouise nang makita ang pananabik ni Bylur na tikman ang niluto niya.
Agad naman silang kumain ng tahimik at payapa. Their silence wasn't awkward, it was peaceful and healing for them. It's their first peaceful meal together for a while now. It was a hearty meal for Valouise — eating with him like this eases her mind.
This feels so good... Feels like home.
Gusto n'yang ganito na lang sila ngunit isang linggo na lang ang meron siya na kasama ito.
I'm sorry, Bylur.
