As we were driving down the road, I turned the radio up, just so we weren't sitting in complete silence like the last couple of times we've driven together. Some upbeat pop music was playing and I was a little taken by surprise. "Chuuya! You don't seem the type to listen to pop music." I exclaimed, looking over at him.
"I'm not..." Chuuya said, staring at the road.
"Well, what do you listen to then?" I asked, putting my hand on the dial to change the station.
"Ah... Dazai used to call my taste in music: 'alternative emo garbage', but we all knew he had the same damn playlist." He replied, I started flipping through the channels until I heard something relatively alt-rock sounding.
"Horrible man he is." I said, giggling. I leaned back in the seat.
"Seriously." Chuuya agreed, shaking his head.
"Worse than me?" I asked, poking at his arm.
"Tch, you're not nearly as bad as he is. For one thing, I can tolerate being in the same room with you, without wanting to murder you." Chuuya explained, swatting my hand away.
"Hey, that's progress! You hated my guts just yesterday." I laughed.
"Still do." He said.
"Eh, I disagree." I responded, leaning back in my chair once again.
"How can you tell me how I'm feeling?" Chuuya questioned.
"You literally brought me breakfast this morning. I would hardly call that hating me." I answered, recalling this morning's events. Chuuya stayed silent. "Besides, you actually listened to me when I was talking last night, even when we were shitfaced drunk... I consider that a point in the not hating me category."
I gave him a sly smile. He said nothing and just focused on the road. "Your silence speaks volumes Chuuya." I said softly. Chuuya stopped the car and tried his best to avoid my gaze.
"We're here." He said, getting out of the car. I chuckled and followed him out.
"Alright, what's the plan?" I asked, closing the door behind me.
Chuuya smirked at me and said, "Gather information, assess the situation, carry out the deed, get lunch."
"How dare you quote me." I mumbled jokingly, poking his arm. He chuckled and pushed my hand away.
"Come on." He said motioning for me to follow him. "According to the file, this is dude's last known residence." We approached an apartment building. It was old and broken down and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in the last five years. We entered the building and made our way up to the top floor. We stopped in front of a door, at the end of the hall.
"Are we gonna kick down the door?" I asked quietly.
"I was thinking, we should knock first." Chuuya responded, looking at me, smiling.
"You fucking joker." I laughed, lightly punched his arm. "Come on then, kick it down." I stood ready to strike as soon as the door went down. Chuuya approached the door and put his hand on it. He activated his ability and the door went flying backwards.
"Knock, knock." Chuuya said, entering the room. I followed behind him. The apartment was trashed. There were clothes and trash scattered across the floor, even some of the furniture was overturned.
"What the hell happened here?" I asked, carefully trying to avoid the shit on the floor.
"Someone had a hell of a party." Chuuya said, kicking things out of his way as he walked.
"More like a fucking tornado ripped through here." I mumbled, following Chuuya, stepping around empty cans and food boxes. "Where is this guy anyways?" I wondered out loud. We hadn't seen or heard anyone yet and for a small one room apartment it was safe to assume he was not home.
"Not here." Chuuya said apathetically, kicking a can to the other side of the room.
"Wow, no way. I had no idea." I responded sarcastically. I turned on my heels to leave, "I'm not staying here another minute, it's disgusting."
"Dakota." Chuuya said calmly from behind me.
"What?" I asked, stepping over a pile of clothes on the floor.
"I think he got down the escape." He responded.
"What? You mean he was just here? Probably heard you and your loud ass outside the door and panicked." I said turning around and looking at Chuuya. He was leaning out the open window and looking down at the fire escape. I hurried back over to him and pushed him out of the way.
"First of all, I am not loud. And second of all: what are you doing?" Chuuya looked at me like I was crazy. I started climbing through the window.
"Yes, you are. And I'm gonna catch him, before he gets away." I responded. I flung myself through the window and landed on the metal scaffolding. I leaned over the fire escape railing looking around for the target. After a moment I caught glimpse of the target hurrying down the street.
As soon as I caught sight of him, I activated my ability and placed a wormhole entrance beneath him and the exit back in his apartment. A moment later, I watched him fall through the hole and land on his face, on the floor in the apartment. I watched Chuuya step on his back, to keep him from getting away.
I grabbed the window sill and pulled myself back into the apartment. The man was still on the floor, out of breath and practically begging for his life. I almost felt bad. "...listen! I messed up okay! Just let me go and I'll do whatever you want!" The man pleading. He was squirming beneath Chuuya's foot.
"You've been holed up here, hiding from us. You knew we would come for you eventually. Why didn't you leave when you had the chance?" Chuuya questioned, digging his foot into the man's back. The man cried out in pain.
"Listen! I just couldn't leave, I didn't have the money! This is my home!" He tried explaining himself.
"Should have thought about that before you crossed us." I said, pulling out my gun. I handed it to Chuuya so he could do it. I didn't want to accidentally shoot him in the foot, not that I have bad aim... but I didn't want to take the chance. Chuuya removed his foot from the man's back and smashed the back of his head, breaking his jaw. The man screamed out in pain. Chuuya then, pushed him over onto his back and fired three rounds into his chest. "Brutal." I noted as a pool of blood formed around the man.
"Yeah, well. That's how it goes around here." Chuuya responded, handing me back my gun. "Let's get out of here."
"I got this." I said. I grabbed Chuuya's arm and backed away from the body. I activated my ability and teleported us down onto the fire escape. I continued holding on to Chuuya as I did it again to get us onto the street. "Ta da!" I exclaimed. I let go of Chuuya's arm and he nearly fell over. "Whoa, you okay there?" I asked, catching him a bit before he fell.
"Fine. Just wasn't expecting that." He responded, standing back up straight. He pushed me away and started walking to the car. I smiled to myself, knowing that flustered him. I loved it. I followed him to the car and in no time we were off back to the Port Mafia's home base.
