After Chuuya and I made out on the floor in front of my bed, I watched him stand up. He held out his hand to me and helped me off the ground. "Come on." He said, starting toward my door.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"To find some work to do." Chuuya looked back at me smirking. I smiled back. I was happy to get back to work, especially with all of these emotions floating around me. I needed something to distract from it.
Chuuya exited my room and I followed behind him. We pretended like nothing happened just now, which was fine with me. I still wasn't sure how I wanted to feel about it. I'm sure he didn't either. We silently walked through the halls, together, but apart. We entered the elevator and stood on opposite ends. We made our way up to the top floor, where Mori's office was.
Once the elevator stopped we got off. "Stay here. I'll be right back." Chuuya said walking toward the office doors. I didn't say anything. I just stayed there and watched him walk into the boss' office. I leaned up against the wall and waited for Chuuya to come back out.
I stood in the empty hallway for a few minutes when the elevator dinged, catching my attention. I looked up to see Akutagawa come off the elevator and begin down the hallway. He paused and looked at me for a moment. Then he narrowed his eyes. "What are you doing up here?" He asked coldly. I backed up against the wall more. Akutagawa was one of the people that I knew could kill me very easily if I made a wrong move.
"Uh..." I wasn't sure how to answer the question. I didn't want to say that I was waiting for Chuuya because that would lead to Why didn't you just go in with him? And the reply, I didn't want to... because we just made out and it's kind of awkward now... I'm sure that would go over really well.
Akutagawa scoffed, "What, can't even respond?" He questioned. I just stared blankly back at him, to be honest he was a little intimidating.
"Leave her alone, Akutagawa." Chuuya came walking out of the boss' office toward us.
"Fine. Just wanted to see what she was like." He said, turning away from me and entering the Mori's office. He closed the door behind him. What's that supposed to mean? I watched him leave.
"What did he say to you?" Chuuya asked, looking at me.
"He just asked what I was doing here." I responded quietly, looking back to Chuuya.
"That's none of his business really. Come on, Mori gave us a job to do." Chuuya said, taking my arm and pulling me along into the elevator. We made our way to the bottom floor and exited the building. We walked down to the street and got into his car. I didn't notice that he was still holding on to my arm until he let go.
"Where are we going?" I asked, as he started the car. He looked over at me and smiled.
"To do a job." He replied, driving off down the road.
"You smartass." I laughed at him, leaning back in the seat.
"What, did you expect a straight answer?" He questioned.
"You know, I don't know what I was expecting." I answered. That answer was true for a lot of things. I wasn't expecting to join the Port Mafia, or be partnered with Chuuya or end up kissing him... None of this was my plan, not that I had one in the first place. I think sometimes I had fantasized about a better life in America, one free of crime, one where I didn't have to worry about everything here... but America was far and I still had no money.
I hadn't realized the car had stopped, I was so lost in my own thoughts. "Dakota. Earth to Dakota. We're here." Chuuya said, waving his hand at me. I snapped away from my musings and turned to Chuuya.
"Right, sorry." I said, getting out of the car quickly. Chuuya followed behind. I looked around, we were down by the pier again, but this time opposite where the red brick warehouse was. "What are we doing here?" I asked as Chuuya came to stand beside me on the sidewalk.
"Mori, wanted us to be errands boys today. So we're collecting protection money from someone who owes us." Chuuya answered. I nodded in response. "This way." He said beginning to walk toward the railing that looked out over the sea. I trailed behind, still dazed from my thoughts. Trying to rationalize them. Trying to find answers I didn't have.
There was a man standing by the railing, looking out to the ocean. Chuuya approached him and began talking to him. I stopped walking, stood back and watched. If Chuuya needed help I would step in, but it looked like he was just talking to the guy, so I just observed.
Suddenly I heard many footsteps running up behind me. Taken by surprise, I whipped around and got in a stance to throw punches. "Dakota Winters. You are under arrest." It was the police, dressed in riot gear, pointing their guns directly at me.
"What-?" I was taken aback. First of all, how did they find me? Second of all, why am I being arrested? Don't I have protection under the mafia? I must not be recognized as a member yet... something weird was happening.
"Put your hands up!" One of them shouted at me. I did as I was told. I wasn't about to resist being arrested and get in even more trouble.
"Dakota!" I heard Chuuya shout from behind me, I could hear him running toward me.
"Don't Chuuya!" I shouted back, knowing that if he were to get involved right now, all of these people would die. The police and Port Mafia would be at odds and create chaos within the city. I heard him stop running.
"Let's move." One of the police officers said. They all surrounded me and escorted me to a truck where I was throw in and handcuffed. They slammed the doors closed and all I could see was darkness.
