(51 years later)
12th February 2292. 14:12 hours aboard the USS Boston Rose:
The Boston Rose is an Excelsior Class Starship, a brand new ship on its first assignment, patrol duty along the fringe of Federation space. Her captain is an Andorian man named Relor, not too tall and with grey creeping into his hair.
"Incoming transmission from Starfleet Headquarters," Lieutenant Ghina Sabila, the comm officer, reported.
"In my ready room," Relor answered.
Captain Relor was greeted by a rather old-looking admiral, one he has never seen or heard of before. The admiral introduced himself as Admiral Cordwell, a high-ranking member of Starfleet Intelligence, and briefed the Captain on the distress signal that was picked up by a Starbase on the fringe of Federation space and that it was fifty-one years old.
"Why does a fifty-year-old distress message sent by radio attract the attention of Starfleet Intelligence?" asked Relor.
"Because of the contents of said message. A dimensional rift with hostile ships emerging in and out, and engaging federation ships, even though it was half a century ago, it requires more than just a survey ship to check if it's still there." - The Admiral replied. "I'm sending you what we've been able to clear up, have a look yourself."
Relor moved his attention to his display beside the screen showing Admiral Cordwell's face, and entered his authorisation code to a display with a flashing symbol saying 'Starfleet Command Priority 1 message. Authorisation level 10 required.' "Relor-Gamma-6-4".

---TRANSMISSION END---
Relor sat back in his chair processing the information. 'Dimensional rift'. Everything about this situation made his stomach churn. Hundreds of 'extra-dimensional' ships...
He turned his display back to the admiral, where he continued to inform Relor of fleet deployments in the area, and how he can call for any reinforcements whenever he wants, but this mission is to be kept classified from the crew until they reach the system in question and he would prefer reinforcements not to be needed as that would attract attention. Starfleet Intelligence as well as Starfleet Command all agreed that this should be kept as quiet as possible until they figured out what was happening.
Relor didn't like this mission and he didn't try to hide it from the admiral. He had to lie to his crew about how much danger they might be in. They are going to possibly be engaging extra-dimensional hostile aliens and he can't tell them until they're in firing range. If his ship gets destroyed as the expedition had been, he and his crew will be treated as missing in action until Starfleet can fully mobilise so as not to 'create panic'.
In deep thought, he fell silent for a moment, forgetting an admiral was staring right at him.
"Captain Relor, you are to plot a course immediately. Oh, and in terms of close-by support other than the garrison at the closest starbase, there is a refit Proxima-class Tactical Cruiser nearby and an old Vulcan T'pol class cruiser that will be in range in 2 days on its way back from deep space assignment. I am sending you a list of all nearby ships, their locations, and estimated time to you once you engage."
