CHAPTER IV

The Boston Rose exited warp close to the Ranger's position and Relor immediately opened a channel with her captain.

"Captain, we should engage warp as soon as you are able, near phaser range to the enemy vessel and follow a battle plan I am about to send you over a secure channel. Your ship, being the least damaged and the most heavily armed, will take point and attack from the front drawing fire. The Boston Rose will follow in your wake until in phaser range where we will break and flank. We should also create a link between our targeting computers to attempt to-" Relor was cut off by the Ranger's captain.

"Captain Relor. What makes you believe a Starfleet ship will partake in a surprise attack, not attempt a diplomatic solution, and then attempt to destroy an alien ship before first contact is made?" - The Ranger's captain, a young-looking woman, intruded in a highly dismissive, superior tone.

What in God's name are you thinking? What is she thinking? Please why have I been given this woman, of all people? Relor thought to himself.

"You have to be the stupidest uptight snob I've had the pleasure of serving with, now I'm taking command of this task force and I am ordering you to take point in the assault. Unless you want to discuss the fine details as the enemy could be repairing their weapons systems."

"That is hardly professional of you. It appears all the stories I've heard of your professionalism have been exaggerated. No matter. We shall approach at impulse power with hailing frequencies open. Of course, if you disagree with that course of action I suggest we send a message to the sector admiral and-" this time Relor cut the Ranger's captain off:

"We do not have the time to strategise with people who are sitting behind a desk with no idea what is going on. Hundreds of enemy vessels have engaged us. Their command ship has taken heavy damage, its long-range weaponry is disabled but we don't know for how long. We have an away team trapped on a battered fifty-year-old starship, and we are sat here arguing if we should shoot or not," 

"A trapped away team? It appears you're as unfit to command in a sensitive first-contact situation as I suspected. This is not a battle with the Klingons, Captain, this is a diplomatic situation."

Relor made an extremely rash decision then. One that could cost him his career at the least. Land him in prison possibly. He couldn't afford a disloyal (to him) pacifist in command of the ship with the most firepower. First, he ordered the channel to be muted. Then he opened a channel to the guest quarters.

"Major. Prepare eight men for transport to the bridge of the USS Ranger. Weapons on stun. Do not shoot first, return fire only. You are to relieve their captain from command and prepare her for transport to our brig." Relor openly spoke these orders on the bridge. Each member of the bridge crew overheard him. There was concern on everybody's faces, apart from Andrews' face. He didn't seem surprised at all.

Eight Andorians materialised on the ranger's bridge moments later, utterly surprising the entire bridge crew. They politely informed the captain of the friendly ship that she was no longer in command and that her first officer was now acting captain. Relor then ordered the Sergeant Andorian to patch him through in a ship-wide announcement of the USS Ranger.

"Attention crew of the USS Ranger. This is Captain Relor of the USS Boston Rose. Due to tactical incompetence and the endangering of Starfleet lives, I have temporarily removed your captain from her command. She will be taken to the brig on the Boston Rose, and your ship will be commanded by your first officer. Prepare to enter battle,"

Relor ordered his marines back to his ship then and discussed the battle plan with the acting captain of the Ranger, Commander Wang.

Both ships would exit warp just outside of phaser range, and position themselves in formation, with the Ranger taking point. Ten seconds after they enter phaser range the Boston Rose will break formation and flank to port, and for thirty seconds they will focus the fire of all weapons at the same position, attempting to take down the enemy's shields. The Ranger will not fire her heavy torpedoes until the enemy's shields are down; however, when the enemy's shields are down, they will fire to disable, not destroy.
