"Condition Red! All hands Battlestations, charge phasers and load torpedo bays. Sabina hail them!" Relor shouted

"Aye, sir, hailing alien vessels," Lieutenant Sabina answered. A few seconds passed then, "No response, sir,"

"They're not answering hails, we have a derelict copy of their ships hanging next to us, and we just obliterated their industrial site, I don't think they're too happy with us," Relor stated sarcastically.

"Sir, they have two of those big long-range guns that tore us apart last time, and they're not responding to hails, we need to either run or engage," Andrews stated.

Relor didn't hesitate, running would mean giving up ground to whoever these aliens are. They needed to stop them here in the bottleneck.

"Helm, full ahead. Sabina, order the Ranger, P'Jem and New Berlin to close in formation with us and all strike the enemy cruiser closest to the planetoid,"

The small task force under Relor's command was positioned with the Ranger at the centre front, with the Boston Rose in the middle left side, the New Berlin on the middle right side, and the P'Jem bringing up the rear, and slightly above the rest of the ships.

"Inform all ships to prepare torpedoes. As soon as we're in range we will send out the first barrage, full strength. Shortly after the main barrage, the Boston Rose will fire one of its dicobalt charges hoping that the enemy's shields will either be extremely weakened or eviscerated by this unprecedented barrage of sixteen photon torpedoes and one dicobalt charge. Then, when the formation comes flying past, on the left edge of the enemy focusing on the closest cruiser, all phasers will smash into whatever's left and aim for the bridge structure, the main long-range weapon, amidships, and finally the engine block," Relor said at length. It was a simple strike, designed to try to minimise the amount of fire that could hit Relor's formation at any given time. He wasn't sure how effective this would be. Not with so much firepower coming from the enemy cruisers. But that's why he had to charge them now. Stop as much of the threat now as possible, and then be safer later.

"Time to intercept?" Relor questioned no one in particular.

"Fifteen minutes, sir," Brown responded.

The entire bridge crew was instinctively slightly braced as they approached the enemy, knowing how much they would get thrown around as soon as the first shots started coming in.

"Incoming fire!" Marquez shouted across the bridge.

The bridge crew tightened up their brace, knowing what was about to happen. However, ten whole seconds passed without a single shot hitting them. They weren't being fired at.

"Where the hell are those shots going?" Andrews demanded, making his way onto the bridge.

"Sir, both enemy cruisers are concentrating fire on the Ranger!" Marquez reported.

"Helm, inform the Ranger to swap positions in the formation, let them take our place," Relor ordered.

"Sir, the Ranger isn't responding. Correction, she is disobeying orders, the Ranger would like to inform us that she won't be able to use all her weapons from that position as effectively and that we need her where she is." Sabina relayed.

"Well, at least he doesn't beat around the bush does he?" Relor commented. "Relor to USS Ranger, divert course immediately your shields can't take that kind of punishment! If we swap locations in the formation they might focus on my ship for a period of time, allowing your shields to regenerate. When we pass by them we can swap again just let us give your ship a break," Relor begged, hoping that Commander Wang would just listen. Why wasn't he listening?
