Sergeant Asehl had never been in a ground action before. It was a very rare occurrence in the Federation, a large-scale ground battle. The last time he could think of when there was a ground battle was the four-years war. However, he most definitely wasn't old enough to have fought then.
He and his squad had landed near the capital city, in a neighbourhood of a small town around thirty miles from the Capital's outskirts. Along with the sorely limited ground forces that were attempting to fight back the alien robots, there was a paramilitary force forming made of civilians and law enforcement. As well as this there was also an underground resistance movement in the occupied areas of the planet.
All of these, however, were not as impressive as it sounds. People weren't used to war here, especially ground warfare. The only people who had any knowledge of guerilla tactics were the ground forces and Starfleet, but even this was only taught on a need-to-know basis. The information that the people of Sauria needed just wasn't taught.
Some paramilitary forces had gathered with his squad, three Starfleet cadets, five law enforcement officers and a ground forces reservist. All together that made seventeen men.
"Alright, we are going to move to the Capital and attempt to contest. Our objective now is to evacuate civilians outside the city. We have a dozen shuttles waiting to be called in, and we can commandeer ground vehicles as well. Any method possible. The ground battle inside the Capital is grinding to a halt. We are not going there to take and hold land, just to contest and evacuate. Clear?" Asehl shouted to the small grouping of men.
"Clear," a couple of the new men shouted back
They began their walk then, through the suburbs of whatever town they were in and into the farms and forested land. They had thirty miles to walk.
"Contact bearing three-three-zero North West. Movement in the foliage and pings on the motion detectors," One of Asehls men shouted out. They didn't have full tricorders with them, they were too bulky. Instead, they had simple scanning equipment embedded into their helmets and phaser carbines to act as a form of extremely simple tricorder. It was basically only useful as a motion detector, but in the case of fighting robotic aliens, it could tell if an object was metallic or not, making it extremely useful when fighting these particular aliens.
"Down, spread yourselves out," Asehl ordered. "You two, move up to that cover there," he pointed towards a slight change in the elevation of the ground, where his two men could take cover and observe whatever was moving in the foliage.
Sauria was not a particularly hospitable planet for Andorians. They were used to the cold, arctic climate of their homeworld, not this terrain. This particular area of Sauria was one of the best areas to fight in, Asehl thought. It wasn't the rainforests, volcanic areas or arid portions of the planet, it was just a forested semi-arid region, in the northern hemisphere. Even with this being the best area, Asehl and his men had to wear Environmental suits.
"Confirmed robots," One of the men that he sent forward reported, through the squad-wide comm channel.
"How many," Asehl asked.
"Uh, I see two of them. On foot... no, wait. There's something else. They have vehicles of some kind, extremely small, single person. They hover," The private sent back through the comms.
"Are they on them now?" He asked.
"No, sir. One has some form of binoculars and is looking West, down the hill. The other has some form of antenna extended from its back," The man answered.
"Recon," Asehl concluded.
"What are we going to do about it, sir," One of the Saurian Starfleet cadets asked.
