I walked through the school gates with my head held high and my back pack slung over one shoulder. I glanced around the courtyard of the school, taking in all the people there.
'You can do this Phil.' I told myself. 'Just be calm.' As I glanced around my eyes landed on one boy. I don't know why but I was fascinated by him. He was wearing black skinny jeans and a grey hoodie with the hood up. He had deep brown eyes and dark brown hair with his fringe swept across his forehead like mine. That was all I saw before he disappeared inside. I tried to clear my head of him and looked down at the schedule in my hands, trying to figure out where my homeroom was. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I spun around. A boy my age with bright green eyes and brown curly hair was standing there, smiling at me.
"Hey, you look lost." he said in a friendly manner. Behind him was another boy also with brown hair but with hazel coloured eyes.
"Yeah, thanks, I'm trying to find my homeroom," I replied, showing him my schedule.
"Okay, you're in U8 with Mrs Bantly." he informed. "We have homeroom just across the hall so we can show you"
I motioned for them to lead the way and we started walking.
"By the way" the other boy said, "I'm Chris and that's PJ."
"I'm Phil."
"So why'd you move here?" PJ inquired casually.
"My mum got a new job." We walked through the halls, chatting away, when I saw him again.
"Hey PJ?"
"Yeah?"
"Whose that boy?" I asked, nodding my head in his direction. Pj followed my gaze and I could have sworn that his face got sadder as he noticed who I meant.
"That's Dan Howell." I turned and looked at him questioningly.
"He's kind of a loner," Chris replied, sighing. "He doesn't talk at all and he avoids people."
"He looks so sad." I murmured. Surprisingly Chris and PJ nodded at that.
"We kinda wanted to talk to him," PJ informed. "but he avoids literally every one so..." he trailed off.
"Anyway, this is your homeroom." Chris interjected, gesturing to a door.
"Okay thanks guys." I responded, walking into the classroom. Almost everyone was already in there and the teacher made me stand at the front until she quietened the class.
"Everyone, this is Phillip Lester, he just moved here."
"Erm it's just Phil actually." I interrupted nervously.
"Okay Phil, you can either sit next to Josh, Blake, Adam or Dan as we are a very full homeroom." I nodded and headed across the room. I desperately wanted to sit next to Dan but I forced my self not to run as I made my way over to the spare seat next to him. I sat down and turned to smile at him. He was staring at me with utter shock on his face.
"Hi Dan, I'm Phil.' I said, putting out my hand to shake. He stared at it nervously before shakily extending his own and shaking my hand. He grabbed a notepad from his books and scrawled,
Hi. Why are you sitting with me? I frowned.
"What do you mean?" I asked quietly, as the teacher had started talking.
Well you could be sitting with Josh or Adam, they're the cool guys. I'm the weirdo who never talks.
"Well I don't care if you don't talk; you seem nice. And as for the 'cool' guys, I'd never get along with them, I hate those kind of people!" I whisper shouted. His eyes widened in surprise and he quickly nodded.
"Sorry," I whispered, "I just don't see why people wouldn't like you." He nodded slowly and give me a small smile.
Thanks.
"No problem." I found it impossible not to smile back. "Hey, um, did you want to sit with me and my friends at lunch?" I queried nervously. I really wanted to spend more time with him. He stared at me, wide eyed, for a moment before he wrote,
Why? I blushed and shrugged.
"Like I said, you seem nice. I want to be friends." He nodded and the bell rang, signaling first period.
"I'll see you at lunch." I added, gathering my stuff and walking out of the room.
