Year 845
---------------------------------------------Silent.
I have been silent since the age of three. No one knows why, not even myself. I just stopped.

"Hey!" One of the three boys surrounding me shouts, blocking my only way of escape.
"Aren't you going to call for help?" Another starts mockingly while kicking my feet out from under me.
I collapse to my knees on the cobblestone floor. "Oh," the last one continues for the others, feigning innocence in his tone."I forgot--how could I? --You can't!"
They cackle, clutching their stomachs. The roar of mocking laughter echoes through the back streets of the large-but mostly poor-city of Shiganshina.
'I won't show weakness. I know that I'm weak, but I won't show it.'
They looked down at me.
The hot fire of tears well within my eyes as I lean against the wall. As they cackle amongst themselves, I use the wall behind me as support, lifting myself up onto shaking legs. They haven't noticed me yet, so I go as slow as I can, moving quietly along the edge of the wall.
I look down the way and there's a dim light ahead. The sun was setting over the great Wall Rose, casting shadows over the boys and me.
My foot catches on a stone and, catching myself, I freeze. The laughter immediately comes to a halt and silence ensues. I stay in place, hoping the cover of the sunset shadows will hide me from them. No such luck.
The sound of frustration calls from behind. I whip my head to them and gasp, they've started in a run towards me!
I fumble for a hold on the wall using it to propel me forward into the light. My heart is pounding so fast and loud that I heave for breaths, never stopping as I skitter around the corner. I've run onto one of the bigger back roads, this one with bushes and wood railings. Hearing the boys catching up, I attempt to climb over the fence closest to me. My hand misses its hold though and I fall forward onto the other side, the fall knocking the wind from my chest.
I wheeze, seeing stars as I pull myself up again. Just barely turning enough to see where those boys are, my sight fails me. My moving feet stumble over the hills of grass and all I can see is gray ripples. I can't breathe and I fling my hand to my throat, fearful and confused.
I feel hands shove my shoulders to the side and I was falling. I hit something hard like stone heavily, knees first then my side and my shoulders, my head following quickly. Surprisingly, the hit cleared my vision and I see three pairs of leather shoes crowding over me. One of the feet pulls back to kick me.
I close my eyes and take a breath, resigning what energy I have left. If I'm tortured, I would rather not watch it happen.
A foot digs sharply into my side, just under my ribs and my mouth opens in protest. I close my eyes tighter, reaching for my side and covering it with my hands. Their voices blend together, no longer sounding like young boys but like the cascading mumbles of beasts.
"She tried running!" One of the boys says with surprise. He hisses through his teeth, I imagine the smile pulling at his lips is just as evil as his actions. "You know you can't get away from us. Why even try?"
A hand pulls at my hair until my head is yanked up to, where I assume they are. I keep my eyes closed.
"Oh, look guys! Not only is she silent, but she's blind too." I feel a gush of air before my eyes and crinkle my nose, my breath coming out quickly and painfully.
