After the damper I put on our date, I have been avoiding Druig for the last few days. I feel guilty for ruining it and embarrassed that I cried when it was supposed to be romantic. I have been hiding in the kitchen during the day and at night I spent it with Nadia. She lets me sleep on her couch.
"He's out front." Salina says wiping her hands of grease, she comes up beside me as I am rolling out dough. "When are you going to talk to him?" She asks "he comes here like a lost puppy everyday. It's weird." Before I can even open my mouth to say anything Nadia cuts in "when she is good and ready. What she has been through is terrible, and she feels embarrassed and guilty. Now leave her alone."
Salina does leave and Nadia takes her place "are you sure you're not one of us?" I Joke, a small smile playing on my lips "you are pretty good at reading my mind." Nadia snorts and begins helping me with the dough. "Please." She says "you may be a hard book to read but not impossible."
She nudges my shoulder gently before saying "ignore Salina." I look over at her for a split moment, watching as she kneeds the dough "before you came she was obsessed with him, thought they would get married." She lets out a breathy laugh "she thought he was in love with her too and then you showed up, she believes you have him under some spell."
I snort and shake my head "I wish that's what it is." I muse. Nadia looks over at me but I keep my head down, focusing on my work "what is it between you two anyway?" She asks and I sigh heavily. I lean over and grab some more flour from the bowl "we just can't seem to shake each other." I admit "It's like, no matter how far we travel we always end up back together."
"Like magnets." Nadia says and I laugh lightly, throwing my head back in the effort. "Yeah." I say between giggles "you could say that."

Once I am finished for the day I move next to my friend "is he still out there?" I ask and she shakes her head, peering out of the curtain. "No, but I would still go the back way, he might be waiting to ambush you." She tells me and I sigh heavily. I wrap my arms around my body and lean against the counter "maybe I should talk to him. I feel bad just ignoring him like this."
Nadia moves and cups my face in her rough hands "hey, Noel, listen to me." She says fiercely "you went through a trauma, ok? You lost so many of your friends and you feel guilty because you stayed here. There is no shame in feeling that way, and you are allowed to change your mind."
Tears brim my eyes and I take her hands in my own "thank you." I say, my voice cracking slightly. She kisses my forehead and I make for the back door.
I push it open and go down the few steps, I make for Nadia's cabin and when I get inside the lights are already on and Druig is sitting on the couch "Noel, we need to talk." He says and my throat starts to tighten.
