“I’m sorry about that Haley,”
That’s okay...
“I didn’t mean to raise your heartbeat or anything, she was being out of order, that two faced little cow!”
Ooooo! Feisty!
“It should be me who decides when to turn of the machine; she does nothing, cares about nothing, the self-centred twit!”
Hey, I’m liking this new Zan, she is frisssskkkkyyyy!
“Anyway, anyway, let’s start from the beginning and forget that ever happened, right...morning Haley!”
And then it just goes from fun, feisty, stick-up-for-yourself- Zan, to back, treacly sticky, togetherness Zan.
“Are you ready for the next part of the-”
The story?
“The story?”
Never would have guessed that was coming...
“I know it’s tough for you to go through with it Haley, but trust me, it will be worth it in the end! You just need to trust me! I can understand the funeral being the trickiest part to get through but if you just bear with me then we can get through it quicker rather than slower okay?”
Great, the last thing I need is a heart to heart with you.
“Okay, got your imagining hat on Haley?”
Oh please tell me you didn’t just say that...I’m nearly 15 for crying out loud!
“Ready, okay, well...”
***
“Dad?”
“Haley?”
“There you are I couldn’t find you?”
“Are you sure your Haley, or are you Bree?”
“Oh, you heard,”
“Yes I did hear, what do you think you’re doing, impersonating your dead best friend?”
“I’m sorry! Shhh, don’t say the d word,”
“What dead?”
“Yes! I don’t like it! Everything is dying on me!”
“Oh get a grip Haley, things die, people die, just get on with life,”
“I can’t, my best friends gone, and most of my family are now gone to!”
“I know Haley; you really don’t have to tell me that fact because I actually do know!”
“Shhh Dad please! I’m sorry, it’s the burial now...”
“Oh god, Haley I don’t know if I can watch,”
“I can’t watch...”
“Oh, god, here we go...”
There was a lot of rustling, sniffing and hustling until an old man with a white beard cleared his throat.
“Echhheeem, we are gathered here on this sad and tragic day of little Megan, young Josh, and sweet Lucy’s surprise and tragic death, now Georgia, cousin to Megan and Josh and niece to Lucy will sing a loved song by the family called, blooms in Autumn, Georgia?”
“Dad,” I whispered, “I want to go home...”
“We all want things Haley,”
“But I can’t do it, I can’t watch and I can’t listen, I can’t do it!”
He turned to face me, put his hands on my shoulders.
“I don’t want to either Haley, but it’s our last proper chance to say goodbye to them, you want that don’t you, to say goodbye?”
“Yes,”
“Then do it, listen, watch, for me, for them...”
“Um, o-okay,”
Georgia had the most wonderful singing voice you’d ever heard, it was like an angel, and the song she’d written was amazing too! I tried to take in the beautiful music but all I could think of was the burial, I didn’t think I could go through with it...
“Thank you Georgia, it is now the burial...”
Suddenly my mind went into a blur...people were saying things, speeches or something, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying because my mind went blank, I felt it was going to pass out, either that or vomit, it reminded me of...the crash...
Then the boxes were lifted, one by one, and then, still one by one, they were lowered into the ground...into the hole into the ground...
“Dad, I don’t like it...”
“Shhh,”
“DAD!”
“Haley, please be quiet, everyone’s looking,”
“I can’ do it!”
“Yes you can!”
“DAD! My family are being lowered into the ground, I feel like I’m going to pass out! I CAN’T DO IT!”
“Haley...shhh!”
“Take me home, pleeease!”
“No!”
“Please!”
“Haley you’re showing me up! We can go home soon!”
“But, they’re being lowered into the ground....”
I slunk into my Dad’s jacket and blacked out my mind...
...
“Haley, it’s over, there in the ground...”
“Forever...”
“Forever.”
“Now can I go home?”
“Of course you can go home darling, let’s go...”
On the way out, I saw everyone crying, sniffling into tissues, most of the people I had never seen before! And then I realised, I wasn’t crying, or, I couldn’t cry, the tears wouldn’t fall. Inside I was dying, literally falling to pieces, but not a single tear would fall. Weird.
“C’mon Haley,”
“Ooh, BYEEE HALEY!”
“HALEY! GOODBYE!”
Everyone was shouting at me, it felt like I was famous! I just wanted to leave in peace!
“Goodbye Haley, I understand you leaving so early!”
“Ooooooh, Bree? Is that you, goodbye, and say goodbye to Haley from me if she’s with you!”
And with that we left.
