The pumpkin patch with Vinnie was so nice. Once I got him to finally start picking stuff out with me, he seemed to be having a bit more fun. Then we went up to the barn to see the goats and the little store where I bought probably 100 little home made cherry candies... but what can you expect?
Which made me think of whether or not we were going to have trick or treaters come out to our house.. I didn't think so, but it would be nice to have a bowl of candy by the door just in case. Halloween isn't for a whole week away, but I thought we'd go ahead and buy some while we were out.
And while I felt like I could be.
But that shopping trip turned into me buying stuff to make a pumpkin pie... and then some little pumpkin and ghost shaped cookie cutters... and then apple cider, apples to make apple butter, a ham... some jars to put the apple butter in... and then I basically bought out the baking section without remorse.
When Vinnie asked me what I was going to do with all of that, I shrugged my shoulders and suggested maybe inviting the group over for dinner tomorrow, just like old times... in which Vinnie gave me a scolding look but what I need him to understand is that I need to get some sense of normalcy back. I think he finally grasped it, because he asked me if I wanted to text Alex once we got home- but we didn't have to. Because when we pulled up into our driveway, there Alex was... with almost our entire friend group, just sitting on the front steps of our house in the dark and using their flash lights to see each other while they chat back and forth.
"Jesus fucking Christ. What the hell are they all doing here?" Vinnie grumbles under his breath.
"They must have a good reason." I try to soothe Vinnie while I sit up to unbuckle my belt.
Alex turns around while Vinnie parks, a cigarette between his lips and the man smiles before shoving his hands into his pockets. He walks over to the car and Vinnie angrily turns off the vehicle so that he can throw open his car door and yell out profanity's toward Alex who just stands there and takes it silently.
I climb out of the car, my attention turning to where the girls sit on our front steps, and the boys, including Chase for once... but they all are staring back at me suspiciously.
"Whatd you all do now?" I ask with a bit of tease but my eyes lift when my front door knob creaks.
My door opens and Corey comes out of the house with Josh trailing behind him, making my brows furrow in confusion.
No seriously, why are they here?
"Oh hey," Josh's face lights up, "Youre just in time."
"You guys can't just show up unannounced." Vinnie tells them in a frustrated tone while he holds the bridge of his nose.
My eyes focus on the porch behind them, objects I don't remember being there behind them, so I walk forward to get a better look, but before I can, Josh bends down, grabbing what looks like a white cord. He lifts his head to look up at me and smiles at me, just to flip a switch.
The porch lights up in orange fairy lights, making my heart squeeze.
My wooden porch swing that was bare now has cushions on it with little pumpkins and on it, corn stalks are tied to the pillars that hold up the porch roof, a Halloween themed wreath is up on the wall, a little hale bale sits beside the swing, and decor is set up on the mini bench and table left by the homeowners before us.
