_______________________________________All the books we saw and saved. It was quite the day. Even after all that, my head remains attached. Maybe I'm meant to stay alive. Maybe. I'm not sure yet. After we got into Brutuxs car shed, we found his research. Better guns, armour, masks, and armoured vehicles. Needless to say, I was in awe. We packed some of his research into the biggest vehicle and then geared up. Thankfully, the armour was light and looked like normal clothes. I found myself a nice blue dress shirt with denim jeans. Brutux also gave me a belt with white suspenders. Shooter found a coat that had no sleeves, plus a sweater. Shockingly, the two went together. Brutux just put on some pants and put a jacket in the back of his vehicle. Apparently, he was fine with wearing just suspenders and pants. After we got in the vehicle, we ended up driving towards the concrete hell.
"Why are we going there?" I asked Brutux, an unpleasant feeling following the question.
"Whatever you have, it seems that the shadows are attracted to it. Meanwhile, at the same time, they seem terrified of it." Brutux continued. "We need to study its activity and possibly learn a way to advance our weapons."
"Ah, so you're saying you're going to test the weird liquid on the shadows?" Shooter asked. Brutux looked at him and then spoke.
"I was actually thinking of having Sheriff run the-"
"No. You are not going to risk his life over a small observation. I'll die before I let that happen." Shooter interrupted. I was quite shocked to hear that, and so was Brutux.
"Ah, I see. If you'll allow me? May I have the serum?" Brutux asked. I reached into my bag and tried to hand him the serum.
"I can't grab it. I'm driving. Sorry." Brutux explained. I put it back into my bag then got back to what I've been doing most of this trip. Pondering. Staring out a window wondering about my life, and how it hasn't ended yet. Amazingly, I haven't died yet, even after three years. I'll be honest, if I manage to survive this mess, I'm going to write an entire book about these years. We can't let this be forgotten.
"This should be a good spot. Now we wait until dark. Our best bet is minor shadows like candlemen, deceivers and mimics." Brutux said. I didn't really care. This just leaves me with my thoughts.
"Say, Sheriff. How many high class creatures did you run into here?" Shooter asked. It took me a moment to recall every shadow I had even encountered.
“Well, I guess I only met about five. Most of which were in the book." I answered. Guess that raised even more questions, so I tried my best to answer them.
"Well, I definitely met a few Seekers, I met a single Butterfly, I'm sure I saw a Bastion. The last two I'm not quite sure of. I think one was a CandleLighter but the other is where I'm lost." I explained. The two of them only seemed more confused but I guess that's because I mentioned not knowing one of the creatures.
"This is quite peculiar, one could even say, it's a mystery." Brutux said. I felt a rush of confusion crash over me as I attempted to Identify it using the book from my bag.
"Say Brutux, how'd you get all your books? I know you used to be in a gang and shit, but some of those would be hard to obtain, even for the most skilled." Shooter asked. Brutux slowed down for just a moment, then answered.
"My wife was able to get her hands on over two thousand books for my rehabilitation treatment. She set the library up while I was in therapy and showed me when I got home."
We were both quite shocked to hear he not only had a wife, but she gave him all those books.
"I hate to ask, but what happened to her?" I asked, hoping I wasn't overstepping any boundaries.
"She and my son Tyler were shot in front of me. It's a long story and frankly, we don't have time for it. We're here.""Brutux, I heard you were meeting with Daisy tonight." One of my underlings said. I wasn't even supposed to be here, but they needed my help with some marketing strategies so I came in. I know Daisy will be mad, but they needed me.
"Yeah, It's a family dinner, which is why I wasn't going to come in.” I replied. I don't understand how these people can't understand that I'm not a mobster anymore. I have a family and have even started going to therapy so I can try and kick my old habits.
"Sorry man, I bet she'll be pissed that you even showed up." The man said. I looked at him with some anger before I spoke again.
"Don't run your mouth young man. Daisy will understand." I replied. I should have him executed for just saying something like that. I would have, but Daisy wouldn't want that. He should be thankful.
"I'm heading out. I can't keep them waiting." I said. The entire team looked towards me, before another one spoke up.
"What if Daisy tries to leave you? Do you need us on site?" I was shocked to hear one of my OWN teammates say that. I decided to remind them of our number one rule.
“Must I remind you that no harm shall come to anyone's families, unless the orders are directly recommended. As such, no harm shall come to either my wife or my son. Are we clear?" All men nodded in agreement as I then took my leave.
