My heart pounded as the bus turned the corner to the place Pierce the Veil would be performing. I was nervous now that I would be singing with Vic. In reality, I knew I was nervous all along. What if their fans don't like me? What if the sudden change makes things too different for them? I could be an extra that should have just stayed in the back. Or in this case, backstage.
Despite my nerves, Mike urged me forward off the bus. I was last out, and as they walked past the line of fans screaming their names. They waved and Vic held my hand up. To my surprise, they cheered louder. My eyes widened, and we stopped several times to give people hugs.
"I totally love your hair!" one girl shrieked.
"Wow, thanks. I like your shirt." It was a Pierce the Veil shirt, but it looked homemade. It was awesome. "Did you make it yourself?"
"Somebody actually noticed. Yeah, I did."
"You design shirts better than me!" Mike said, smiling at her. She screamed, and we all laughed and went inside. Everyone began setting up, and Vic went somewhere to start his vocal warm ups. Jaime asked me to help him with the amps, and Tony asked me to help him put up the big sign. I was glad to help in some way. Eventually, Vic came back out and gestured for me to follow him.
"Ready for vocal warm ups?" he asked.
"Not really." He laughed, thinking it was a joke. "Vic, I'm seriously nervous."
"So am I," he said. "Once you get on that stage and see how many people count on you, all those nerves will go away. You realize you're performing for a purpose. Their lives count on us. That's how it's always been, Rene. Trust me."
"If I freeze up there, it's all on you."
"Don't worry," he smiled,"all those lights heat the stage up pretty well. There's no way you can freeze up there." That made me laugh, breaking the ice for a moment. No pun intended. Soon, it was time to really get ready for this concert. I told myself I had time until I went on with them.
This concert had better be good.
