The way they look at each other

The way they react when they brush fingers

The way he steps in front of her when there's danger

The way he held her close in Team Rocket's presence

The way she worries for him when he shows up even slightly disheveled

The way their eyes sparkle when talking about each other.

Everyone who knew Kris and Ethan, the legendary trainers from New Bark Town could tell you a million stories about the two. Lance would tell you fondly of how protective Ethan was of Kris when they tackled Team Rocket in Goldenrod City. Silver would roll his eyes, yet smile while recounting you every time they defended each other when he insulted either one. Their moms will eagerly tell you about how they used to play "house" many moons ago, and they would pretend to be husband and wife, with Ethan's family Growlithe as their kid.

Yet, now, all those memories with each other are now nothing more a ghost of a smile. As many people do, they grew apart. After defeating Red, Kris decided to become Professor Elm's lab assistant and had to manage the fame she got for defeating the legendary Red, constantly having trainers challenge her. Meanwhile, between helping his grandparents run the Daycare and juggling that with his Indigo League Champion duties, Ethan also had a jampacked schedule, with barely enough time to even pee. Yet, during the late nights, when most people in Johto were peacefully sleeping, their minds drifted to the happier days that were now lost to the years.

Kris POV

After a long day of work at the lab and dealing with just about 10 challengers, she settled into her bed, and covered herself with her blanket that had a Suicune design on it. It was 1am. She was doing fieldwork notes, and only when her mother called her and bullied her into going to bed, did she finally rise from her work. Her bed faced the window, which she loved because in the mornings, the sun searing her face helped her get up, and now at night, the night sky looked beautiful, something she appreciated ever she was a little girl, and especially when she was beginning her journey.

God where did the years go? And the stars and moon are still in the same place, she reflected, looking at that ever changing, yet constant night sky.

This was the time her mind started becoming an ugly place to be in. She had so much anxiety, so many expectations, so many burdens. So little happiness, a miniscule feeling of fulfillment in herself, so little love and time to give to those she loved the most.

What am I doing with my life? What if Silver doesn't even remember me? When was the last time I talked to Lance? I had to cancel on Whitney for the third time!

But something about tonight was different. The Clefairy in Kris' backyard were doing their full moon dance, and the night just had a different air than it usually did. At this time, there was usually a depressing, hopeless air that consumed the girl. But tonight, that suffocating invisible, intangible poison didn't come. Instead, there was something of hope, of love in the air. A sense of opportunity.

But Kris continued to let her thoughts consume her. She sank deeper in her bed, hoping she would become a part of it. Yet someone kept popping up in her mind.

Ethan.

Arceus, when was the last time she talked to him? She knew he was incredibly busy doing Champion duties and Daycare obligations though, so she quickly pushed the thought of reaching out to him out her mind. Yet something made her keep coming back to him. The memories, the laughs, the tears, both of joy and sorrow. Did he remember playing "house" with her? Did he remember that promise he made so many years ago when he beat Lance?
