As Misty sat in Delia's kitchen, she wondered when her ever adventuring friend would return, as he said he would soon. She was always waiting for him whenever Delia called her to let her know her son was coming home. Misty never questioned why Delia always called her, though she had her suspicions.
Interrupting the redhead's thoughts was the sound of the door crashing open wildly.
"MOM, MIST I'M HOMEEE" called a raspy, young voice.
Ash would never admit, but he loved coming home to his mom and Misty. They were a constant after a grand adventure and had always been there for him, his mom of course being his mom and Misty having seen him grow since the very beginning of his adventure. How the times had changed.
"Finally, you said you were coming ages ago!" Delia cried, rushing to see her son and enveloping him in one of her bone crushing "momma bear" hugs.
"Sorry mom!" Ash said after his mom released him, "the ferry was real slow this time around and May invited me to see the Johto Grand Festival Finals! I had to make a pit stop cuz I couldn't refuse that now could I?"
"Glad you enjoyed yourself at least! I wish you would've called when you were there though, I really want to see May again, it's been too long!" Delia gushed.
Ash now turned to the redhead sitting on his couch and stood expectantly, waiting for her usual hug that came when he returned home. She finally got up, holding a Horsea in her left arm she gave Ash a quick one-armed hug.
"Well nice seeing ya Ash, gotta make it back to the gym now" Misty said briskly, already making her way to the door.
"WHAT?!?!?!??! C'mon Mist, you gotta stay til I leave again!! You always do!" Ash said, bewildered that his best friend was already leaving.
"Oh Ash, be mature. I really have to go. Call me if you need something" she said emotionlessly, as Ash noticed tears behind her ocean blue eyes.
She made a dash towards the door, leaving Ash completely at a loss. Delia smiled knowingly at her son.
"Go on Ash." she said, pushing Ash towards the door.
Ash went out, breathing in the nostalgic scents of his home, and he noticed Misty sitting on a bench crouching her head. He quickly went over and sat gingerly next to her.
"C'mon Misty, what's wrong?" he asked softly, gently putting his hand on her back, clearly deeply concerned.
"Oh like you care. You're just going to go off on your next 'grand adventure' and leave me here again, always waiting for a call, a text, anything, like a Growlithe." she burst, tears making their way towards the corners of her eyes.
"What??!! What are you talking about??!!"
"Oh don't act like that! You're always going off, not even enjoying more than 2 days here with me and your mom! And then you expect us to be waiting for you ready with a warm meal and to help you plan your next adventure! Do you even remember all the times we shared back then???! It seems like you only care about the people you're on an adventure with like Dawn and Brock! Or actually, it seems like the only one you don't care about is me! You went to watch May compete in her Grand Festival and you can barely spend a phone call on me!"
After her outburst, Ash didn't know what to do or say. How could she think that he didn't care about her! Of course he cared for May, Max, Brock, and Dawn and all the other people in his adventures, but she was always going to be number one in his heart, his first and best friend. He finally found the words for her.
"Oh Misty. I'm sorry. I really am. I really have been neglecting this friendship haven't I? Misty, I love all the friends I've made on my journeys. They all have places in my heart. But you always have been and always will be number one. You were my first friend on this path. We shared a million memories and laughs and smiles. You are always there for me, even when we are regions away. Even just the memories of us always get me through tough times. How could I ever forget? I'm so sorry for forgetting about how important you are to me. Is there any way to make it up to you?"
Misty looked up at Ash, the words having touched her to the very core of her soul. She didn't expect that. The tears flowing down her face were now ones of happy emotion.
"Ash... Thank you" she said simply, deciding to rest her head on his shoulder, feeling drained, both physically and emotionally.
Ash at first turned bright red at this gesture but slowly welcomed it, elated at having made her happy with his words and more importantly, happy that he finally told her how much he meant to her.
Later that day, Ash and Delia practically forced Misty to sleepover and she did so, settling herself on Ash's bottom bunk. She fell asleep pretty quickly and Ash chuckled, remembering how quickly she would fall asleep back when they were travelling together and how deep a sleeper she is. He was still sitting on the floor, unpacking. He got a wave of courage and stood up, walked over to her bed, and planted a sweet, soft kiss on her forehead. He wished he had the courage to do that when she was awake, resolving to tell her his feelings tomorrow. For now, he simply climbed onto his top bunk bed, and with a ear to ear smile on his face, closed his eyes and surrendered to sleep, satisfied with this perfect day.
