"So, are ya joining??" a red-haired Coordinator pleaded with her blue-haired friend and rival.
"Zoooo, I told you. I was going to team up with you but since you already have someone, there's no point in me joining now" Dawn pouted.
"Oh, c'mon Dawn, don't be like that. I finally convinced Candice to step out her comfort zone! She literally flew out here to Johto just to team up with me!! You know I would've asked you under any other circumstance" Zoey reasoned with her slightly affronted friend.
"Hm, whatever. My point still stands though. Everyone I would want to enter it with is not around! You're taken, May is traveling around Sinnoh with her friends, and I can't ask Ash to make a long plane ride just to team up with me in this dumb little contest." Dawn sighed.
"Hmm, I think you're forgetting someone, Dee" Zoey said with a knowing smile.
"Who??"Dawn inquired, getting a sick feeling in her stomach. Zoey would never miss the chance to meddle in Dawn's affairs, as best friends often do.
"Dawn, this is payback for that stupid prank you pulled last week in Azalea Town!" Zoey declared, grabbing Dawn's Poketch in one swift motion.
"Zo, what are you doing?" Dawn cried helplessly, as she tried to reach for it, but Zoey held it firmly over her head.
"Andddd.... calling!!" she announced, a mischievous grin on her face.
"ZOEY!" Dawn whisper- shouted, finally seeing the caller ID of the person she was calling, and turning ten shades of red.
"Heyyy there Ken, how's it hanging" Zoey said, trying her hardest not to laugh at Dawn's stricken expression.
"Hey-! Hold on a tick, you're not Dee Dee!!!" Kenny quickly realized.
"Oh how cute, he even has a nickname for you" Zoey teased, enjoying the increasingly reddening face of her rival.
"Whaddya mean... anyway who are you even?!!" Kenny demanded, grateful no one could see his blush.
"Aw don't worry, your little girlfriend is safe and sound. And what do you mean you don't recognize this beautiful voice??! I beat the pants off you and Dawn when we were doing the Sinnoh Grand Festival circuit!" Zoey exclaimed, clearly affronted.
"Oh hey Zoey, I remember you now, don't get your pants in a twist" Kenny said nonchalantly, depite the fact that he was nervous since he was talking to a Top Coordinator.
"Right... anyways, y'know the Ecruteak City Team-Up Contest that's tomorrow?" Zoey inquired impatiently.
"Oh yeah, I'm actually just outside of the city and heard some people on their way out talking about it yesterday." Kenny remembered.
"Oh perfect! Then you've got yourself a Contest partner! See ya here soon. Toodle-do till then!" Zoey hung up on him before they heard his reaction.
The two friends looked at each other, one with a look of elation and the other with a horror-stricken expression.
"C'mon Dee-Dee, no use in either of you hiding your feelings for each other" Zoey teased, as she quickly grabbed her bag and dashed out the Pokemon Center, leaving her horrorstruck friend in her wake.
"That girl is gonna get it."
Dawn was left horrorstruck, but somewhere deep down in the pit of her stomach, a flame of excitement was growing. She tried to ignore the feeling.
You're just nervous, that's why your stomach feels weird.
Dawn decided to go to the Pokemon Centers main waiting room, knowing Kenny would probably walk in soon, a look of utter confusion on his face.
