TW: death (surprise, sexual content, tears..)

Let's get into it!!

It was just us two now... a long, unawaited, conversation ahead.

"I feel better in the mornings..such a big city. I found myself hoping I'd see you through my window.. wandering around."

A smile crept up on me, she was so dear and yet so fragile.. to think I've been able to befriend her..

"I hoped the same.."

That smile, the sweet sixteen, child-like grin that she'd always had graced me..

"We must've missed each other, glancing other ways for just seconds.. the Rialto, St Marco.. the places we've gone to recently, yet no sign of either of us.. when we go back to London..?"

I looked at her surprised, did she want to leave?

"I'm not going anywhere Millie."

She chuckled at my hope.

"What would we do here? With my state, I can hardly climb up an art scaffold, no less need help up for stairs."

I took her hand, noticing how cold she was to touch.. her illness must've caught up with her cheery mood.

"You can do anything."

And wrong I was, for she shook her head. A bitter sweet look on her face told me that she in fact could not.

"Not anymore, I can't fool myself forever, no less fool you."

Bitterness was the right word, the whole feeling of betraying her crashing down on me.

"It's not true, and you know that.. Millie.. Lord Marc..."

She faltered, gripping a tin laying on a table before us.

"You know, he's quite a hit or miss of a man, came here to hurt me and brought me a tin of biscuits instead.."

But she was hurt, her voice shook slightly as she spoke, she believed it.

"What he told you.. It isn't true."

She looked at me, that smile being present at her face, though her eyes told me sorrow.

"I told him that myself, then I sent home away into the rain-"

I had to interrupt, for I had not misheard...

"-but you believed him.. Millie.. what could I do to persuade you? To make you believe me?

Her smile had left and instead stood a grim sadness over her, almost like anger replaced it quickly.

"Don't, we're beyond that you and I... I love you.."

She took a break and I couldn't believe neither my ears nor my eyes. She was smiling through the pain.

"Both of you.."

My eyebrows furrowed, for she had meant both me and Kate.. I don't know in which way but.. it didn't matter now.

My hand clasped around her harder as tears threatened to escape my eyes.

"I'm so sorry."

The words got whispered out, for I didn't know if I had the strength to utter them fully. Utter them as she deserved them to be uttered.

(That's a lot of Utter :0)

We both smiled through the pain, sitting there with tears glazing our eyes and sorrowful smiles on our faces..
