Chapter 16

Steve had saved them from the explosion and was leading them to his friend Sam's house. Natasha made sure to protect the photos for Diana.

They knock on his back door and he answers in confusion. "Hey, man."

"I'm sorry about this. We need a place to lay low."

"Everyone we know is trying to kill us." Natasha says.

Sam pauses a moment before replying "Not everyone."

Sam lets Diana use his room and his bathroom as the other two get the spare room. She stands under the water with tears pouring down her face, she had never felt so betrayed and so lost like this.

This was a new type of betrayal.

Once the water was freezing and made her skin numb, she dries off and changes, walking out slowly into Sam's room to see Steve waiting for her. She slumps down onto the bed in pain, staring up at the ceiling as she lays back. "You okay?" He asks.

"No....everything I built...everything I believed in was all a lie. I have been working for Hydra the entire time. Peggy, Howard, and I....we created a lie."

"No you didn't...you didn't know."

"I was the most powerful being on this planet and I still was blind....I obviously wasn't strong enough to figure them out. But as soon as my powers come back....I'm burning all of it to the ground. And I'm coming for every last Hydra ally. They will pay for what they've done...for what they've taken from me."

Something darker was flooding her mind, she couldn't control her own thoughts. Steve started realizing this but was interrupted by Sam. "Breakfast is getting cold."

Diana sits at the small table and starts to inhale her food, she then chugs her juice, looking up as Sam stares at her in shock. "What? I need to refuel."

"My kind of woman." He chuckles, pouring her more juice.

Natasha smiles and sits back, "So, the question is: who in Shield could launch a domestic missile strike?"

"Pierce." Diana nods.

"Who happens to be sitting on top of the most secure building in the world."

Steve nods, "But he's not working alone, Zola's algorithm was on the Lemurian Star."

"So was Jasper Sitwell." Natasha says.

"So, the real question is: how do the three most wanted people in Washington kidnap a Shield officer in broad daylight?" Steve asks.

"The answer is: you don't." Sam drops a file in front of Steve.

"What's this?"

"Call it a resume." Sam nods.

Diana picks up a photo of Sam with his para-rescue team. "Is this Bakhmala? The Khalid Khandil mission, that was you." She looks at Steve. "You didn't say he was a para-rescue."

"Is this Riley?" Steve looks at the photo.

"Yeah."

"I heard they couldn't bring in the choppers because of the RPGs. What did you use, a stealth chute?" Natasha asks.

"No. These." He hands Steve the file.

Steve opens it and reads it. "I thought you said you were a pilot."

"I never said pilot."

"I can't ask you to do this, Sam. You got out for a good reason." Steve sighs.
