Chapter 49

~Nolan~

"You know, you don't have to go to school today," Jerome said as I put my homework into my backpack, ready to head off to school. "Your parents are letting you stay home since you just got out of the hospital yesterday."

"I know," I said. "But I'm feeling well enough to go. I was only in the hospital to get more oxygen. I'm okay."

Jerome nodded. "Right. Okay. Just... Call me if you need to get picked up or something. I don't work today so I'll probably be home all day."

I smiled at Jerome as I wrapped my arms loosely around his neck. "I promise, I'm okay. But thank you for caring about me."

"How could I not care about you?" Jerome asked. "You're my husband."

       "Mmm, say that again."

       "My husband."

That one, simple word made me smile even more before I went on my tiptoes to press my lips on Jerome's. I still didn't know why we randomly decided to get married, but I had no regrets about it. I would never regret marrying Jerome so young.

Some people might think we were too young, but those people needed to realize that everyone's relationship was different. Some relationships worked when they were married young, and others didn't. It all depends on the people in the relationship.

Besides, if we were too young to get married, it wouldn't have been legal for us. But it was, so if anyone had anything bad to say about it, they could suck it up. Their opinions would be irrelevant. All that mattered was that Jerome and I were happy with each other. Nothing else mattered.

Once I was ready to go to school, Jerome drove me there like he normally did, unless he was working. One time, he said he liked driving me to school because Joel might see us together and get angry. I couldn't even be mad at Jerome wanting to be petty after everything Joel had said and done.

Jerome pulled up to the side of the school, allowing me to get dropped off right by the door. I took off my seat belt and before I got out of the car, I leaned over towards Jerome and gave him a kiss. "I love you."

Jerome smiled at me. "I love you too. Call me or text me if you need anything."

"I will." I gave him another kiss before getting out of the car. I waved to him, and he waved back before driving off.

I headed inside the school and immediately went to my locker. However, not even a minute after I got there, I heard Joel say, "I see you're still dating Jerome."

I looked at him, seeing him leaning against the locker beside mine. "Do you ever give up?" I asked.

"Not really, no," Joel said. "Giving up just isn't in my vocabulary."

I had everything I needed from my locker, so I closed it. "I don't get what's going on in that brain of yours. Even if, somehow, Jerome and I break up, do you seriously think I would just go running to you? That I would magically start liking you after everything you did. It's not going to happen, so look up what giving up means in the dictionary. It will do you some good."

The bell was going to ring soon, so I started to head towards my first period class. Every time Joel opened his mouth, it just made me wish even more that school would end soon. Once I graduate, I wouldn't have to worry about him anymore. Hopefully.

Unless he magically became an art student and decided to go into the same art program as me. I sure hoped not.

School went by very slowly now that I was hoping even more for the school year to come to an end. At least we were very close to it. Just over a month left.

Jerome picked me up at school and as soon as I got in the car, he said, "Uh oh. What's wrong?"

"Just Joel being a butthead," I said. "Part of me wants to tell him that you and I got married just so he will shut up. But knowing him, that will make him whine even more."

"At least you're almost done high school," Jerome said as he pulled out of the school's parking lot and started driving us home.

I leaned back in the passenger's seat. "I can't wait."

"Speaking of us being married," Jerome said. "I told my dad."

"How did he take it?" I asked.

"Well, first he was upset that he didn't get invited to the wedding," Jerome said. "But then I told him that there wasn't a wedding and we just eloped. He was relieved when he heard that because he was thinking I hadn't yet forgiven him for letting my mom abuse me. He's really happy for us. I also think that he should come over for dinner one day. Meet your parents."

I smiled. "I think that would be great. You know what else I think would be great?"

"Let me guess. If you and I have sex?"

"You know me so well. So...?"

       "Maybe later."

I huffed, but not because I was upset. I would never actually get upset if Jerome didn't want to have sex with me. I just like being dramatic. My family was filled with a bunch of dramatic people.

When Jerome and I got home, I noticed that Brandon was sitting on the couch with Alan as the two of them watched TV. Brandon immediately looked at Jerome and glared at him. "Hey, asshole."

Jerome furrowed his eyebrows. "What did I do?"

"I don't know. Why don't you ask your husband?"

"I... don't know what he did," I said.

"Nolan, I think he's upset that I didn't tell him you and I got married," Jerome said.

"You think?" Brandon asked. "I had to hear it from Alan, who, by the way, won't stop asking if he and I can elope, so thanks for that."

"Please?" Alan asked. "I'll be a good husband. I'll cook and clean just for you."

"You suck at cooking," Brandon said.

       "I'll get better."

       "No."

Alan huffed and crossed his arms over his chest as he leaned back into the couch.

"I was going to tell you," Jerome said to Brandon. "Today, actually. I literally just told my dad a few hours ago. And to be fair, Nolan and I actually weren't going to tell people for a while. We kind of had to tell his family when he was admitted to the hospital and they called me instead of his parents."

       "Excuses," Brandon said.

Jerome shrugged. "It's the truth. Believe me if you want to or not. Are you really mad I didn't tell you?"

Brandon shook his head. "I'm more mad that now, this goofball thinks that he and I should elope." He ruffled Alan's hair.

       "We really should," Alan said.

       "Ask again later."

       "How soon is later?"

       "At least two years."

       "So you hate me."

"Yes, exactly. Glad we're on the same page."
