IN THE HOURS SINCE LUCY HAD LEFT THE POLICE STATION, HER MIND HADN'T STOPPED RACING. All she could do was walk around Figure Eight, trying to reconcile the things she knew about JJ Maybank with what she had just seen.

Weirdly, John B Routledge was one of the first people she thought of. She remembered that day by the Druthers at Tannyhill, when he had seen the bruise on her collarbone.

"My friend, he's good with that kind of stuff."

She wondered if John B knew about JJ's father. She wondered if Kie knew, or Pope. Wondered if they were there for JJ the same way Sarah had been there for her. She hoped they were.

The worst part of it all was that Lucy knew JJ had it worse than she did. Rafe may have beat her, but he wasn't her flesh and blood. Her family never seemed to feel much towards her, granted, but she would rather apathy than outright hatred. At least Lucy could choose to avoid Rafe.

Her feet, as if attempting to prove her wrong, carried her to Tannyhill.

If the Deputy had called her parents like he said he would, she didn't want to go home. Tannyhill felt like the lesser of two evils. So, after hesitating for a moment, she walked up the driveway to the front door.

Lucy didn't know where Rafe was, or Sarah, but the Camerons were practically her second family by now. Even if she was trying to avoid her boyfriend, she knew there was a place for her there. Ward Cameron was a clever businessman, after all. She was useful to their family, and he knew it.

The doorbell rang, and Lucy waited.

"Lucy!" Ward beamed at her as the door swung open. "How are you? How are your parents?" Lucy gave him her best attempt at a genuine smile.

"We're all good, thanks," she replied, and he stepped aside to let her into the house. The door closed behind her, the click of the lock eerily similar to the one in Rafe's room. Her shoulders tensed.

"Now, I'm assuming you're not here to help Wheezie with her summer homework?" He chuckled, and she kept smiling.

"No, sir," Lucy joked, "Pretty sure she's smarter than me now, anyway." Ward's smile stayed warm.

"Yeah," he returned, "She makes me feel like that every now and again, too." His voice was full of affection for his daughter. It was the same way he spoke about Sarah. "I've been working all day," Ward continued as they walked into the foyer, interlocking his hands together, "So I'm afraid I don't know if either of my other kids are around. You're welcome to stay, of course."

"Thank you," Lucy responded. Ward had always been nice to her.

He nodded towards the stairs.
